  • The King is Dead

My blog earlier today about Karl - obviously was not informed as to just how serious the matter was of his visit to hospital. Karl passed away this afternoon. I am so sorry Kerry. Our hearts seriously go out to you my friend. Karl has been there from the beginning of almost all of our Bridge experiences. Dating back to the early 70's. Karl was a giver. A giver to Maritime Bridge. A giver to all his friends. Karl visted my home twice in Melbourne Australia. Once with his lovely wife Kerry. We had... read more...

  • Karl Hicks

Just a quick note that one of our true legnds of Maritime Bridge Karl Hicks is in hospital in a serious type of way. I do not know much other than that. Karl has been doing what Karl is doing for all of us since the early seventies. A bit of research into the day to day importance of this guy was found in the Spring 1975 issue of the Maritime Bridge line. Then Editor - the inimitable Richard Brown said: "Should Karl Hicks ever decide to become a participant rather than that of organizer, only then... read more...

  • Halifax in Moncton

Great to see the Halifax representatives at the Flight'B' District finals in Moncton last weekend did us proud. Doug Miller and Maureen Stiner, Kent Ritchie and Russell Boyle, Rob Williams and Peter Rans, Don Lutz and Frank Miller all partipated and played well. Kent and Russell were 4th overall. We must mention that last year's win by Mark Golding and Rob Kitchen of NB was no fluke. They did it again!! Well done Mark and Rob. Click on Team Results for full placings. read more...

  • Sunday Best - success!

The launch of "Sunday Best" pairs was a resounding success! Our two rookie directors - Gerry & Mike - remarkably survived unscathed. It was wonderful to see a handful of rookie players show up too, alongside asmatteringof advanced players and a bunch of players in between. It was a wonderful mix, with several of the newer players commenting how much they enjoyed and appreciated being able to play against all different types of players. And how nice everyone was (it could have been a side-effect... read more...

  • A Funny Thing Happened at My Table

I found myself in a game with someone I had never played with before. My partner was neither a beginner nor a top player. But was reasonable. I like to keep system agreements simple - especially when playing with a new partner. But partner insisted on play Jacoby 2NT. Reluctantly I agreed - figuring it best to keep partner happy. Then it came up - second hand out of the gate. Partner opened 1 spade and I bid 2NT. I had a lovely 17 count with four spades. Then my partner passed. I almost fell out... read more...

  • Rookie-Master Pairs Game

The Erin Berry Annual Rookie Master Pairs game was held at the Bridge Studio Thursday evening Oct 25th. We had a full house with 16 tables and if not for the introductory course being held in the teaching room at the same time - we would have had more! Geraldine Smith - playing with Jim Mathers, third with 62.73%.... read more...
