M C & G Bridge Studio 2-Oct-2016
TIP OF THE WEEK: It is nice the
ACBL threw some new acceptable allowances to opening 1NT, but for the
safety of the partnership, you might not want to go there unless it appears to
be the ONLY option. 1 NT opening bids should be 15 17 HCP. BUT
if you have 17 HCP and a 5-card major suit, you should treat it like 18 playing
points, open 1 of your Major and jump to 2NT.
KUDOS & CONGRATULATIONS -

THIS WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
Your Right Hand Opponent opens the bidding with 1C.
What is your call holding the following:
H A K J 9 7 6
D A J 4
C K J 10
is your call?
Answer to last week's quiz:
S K Q 9 8 7
D A K J 7
C J 10 2
What is your call?
Solution: Partner promises
16+ playing points and you have 1 a beefy 14 HCP, plus a short heart suit.
But DO NOT bid Blackwood (ace asking). Start with a cuebid of 4D.
With 3 quick losers in hearts, an unbid suit, there is danger in the slam.
Partner may now cuebid hearts (showing the Ace) and now
you can use Blackwood.
