M C & G Bridge Studio 14-Aug-2016
TIP OF THE WEEK: 4-3-3-3 hands do
not have a good "source of tricks". My general rule is I will
always open these with 13 HCP. I pass with 11 HCP or less. With 12 HCP, I
would open a 4-card minor and rebid NoTrump. With a 4-card major, I can
open 1C, but I'd like to have at least one honour and good intermediate cards
(like S-K J 10. H-A 10 7 6. D- K 8 2. C - J 10 4).

THIS WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
Your RHO opens the bidding with 1D. And you hold:
H: A K 7 6
D: K J 7 6
C: Q J 8 7
is your call with above hand?
LAST WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
bid 4 Hearts after partner raises your 1 Heart opening bid to 2 Hearts. The
opponents were silent during the auction.
West leads the Spade Jack. How do you plan your play with the following hands?
S A 5 3
H 8 5 2
D Q 10 8 5
C Q 8 4
Opening Lead: S - J
S K 7 2
H A Q J 10 6 4
D A 4
C A J
ANSWER TO LAST WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
see you have a potential loser in all 4 suits. You can potentially avoid a Heart
loser and Club loser if you can get to dummy to do finesse. However you
have only 1 sure dummy entry (Spade Ace). To guarantee only 3 losers is to
win the Spade King in hand and play Ace and Jack of Clubs. This will
establish the Club Queen as a winner (which you can get to with the Spade Ace)
on which you can discard a Spade or Diamond loser. After doing so you can
try for an up trick by finessing East for the Heart Queen.
