M C & G  Bridge Studio   8-May-2016

TIP OF THE WEEK: Opening light in third seat should have some specific justifications – lead directional in particular should the opponents win the auction.  As well unless partner makes a 100% forcing bid, the light opener should be prepared to pass any bid by partner.

THIS WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
You are on defense against a 4H contract.  On lead as West you lead the DA then the DK, to which partner shows out!
How do you proceed  from here:

                    North (dummy)
                    S – A J 4 3
                    H – A Q 10 2
                    D – 6 5 3
                    C – 4 2
West (you)                       East (partner)
S - --void—                       S - 5
H – 7 5 4
D – A K J 10 8 2              D - 9
C – Q 8 7 5                       East follows to the first diamond and discards the spade 5 at trick two.

SOLUTION TO LAST WEEK'S QUIZ:
What is your call?
West    North    East    South
1D       pass     pass      ??  your  call sitting South with:
            S – 6 5
            H – A K J 10 8 7
            D – 7 6 4
            C – A J
Answer:
You are in the BALANCING chair; not directly over the opening bid.  In the balancing chair a jump overcall is intermediate (13 – 15 HCP).  Most players would ‘balance’ simple 1H with as few as 8 or 9 points.  Let your partner know you are serious about competing with your 6-card suit.  North your partner can make a good evaluation as we all heard East pass, so we know who holds what.

See you at the tables,
