M C & G  Bridge Studio   22-May-2016

TIP OF THE WEEK: Last week I explained the "unusual 2NT bid" - great way for the opponents to interfere  - so as the opposing side - you can take  advantage of the pre-emptive bid. Your side opened the bidding as responder you can take advantage of the opponents unusual 2NT overcall.  Since the overcall shows 5-10 HCP and 5-5 distribution in the minors, the responder can take advantage by: A) Bidding the lower ranking suit (clubs) to show a limit raise or better in hearts.  B) Bidding the higher ranking suit (diamonds) to show a limit raise or better in spades. C) Double, this shows a willingness to defend at least one of the opponent's suits, especially if they are vulnerable and you are not.

THE LATEST MARITIME BRIDE LINE IS ATTACHED - READ ON LINE OR PRINT (print in DRAFT mode)

KUDOS & CONGRATULATIONS: KUDOS to everyone that kept the Bridge Studio running while I was in Toronto for the Canadian Bridge Federation meetings and the Canadian Championships.  Sadly there  was NO representation from the Maritimes.  NEXT year, the Championships are in WINNIPEG, April 22 - 30th.  We now have not only the Championships  but LOTS of gold points for the side REGIONAL Games. Teams can be formed from September - December 2016 -- Let us have an OPEN, flight B, flight C, Seniors and Women's teams -- show them what we have!!  I will have the club level games, I hope you will put some teams in for the Canadian finals.

THIS WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
Never ignore a long suit in dummy.  Can you solve this problem?
You have arrived in a 4H contract AND the opponents competed  with spades.  But you win the auction!!    The opening lead is the S-K – you win the Ace – what is your plan to win 10 tricks!

            North (dummy)
           S – J 8
           H – K 10 6
           D  - 9 8 5 3 2
           C – K J 6
WEST
Opening Lead:
S – K
           South (you)
          S – A 10
          H – A Q J 9 8 4
          D – 10 6
          C – A 4 3

SOLUTION TO LAST WEEK'S QUIZ:
You hold:
S – K 8 4
H – 10 9 4 3
D – Q 9 3
C – A Q 2

North    East    South    West
 1D       pass       1H      pass
 2H       pass        ?
What is your call after opener has raised your 1H responding bid?

Answer:
The best description here would be to bid 2NT.  2NT rebid usually holds 11 HCP.  You have a stopper in each suit, only 4 hearts and 11 HCP.  This is an invitation to opener, they can pass (especially if they were stuck for a bid and raised hearts with only 3 of them), or then can bid 3 hearts. With a full 14 HCP they would bid 3NT or 4 H.  This hand is from Audrey Grant’s Daily Bridge Column – Quiz#163.
