M C & G  Bridge Studio   28-Feb-2016

TIP OF THE WEEK: The Negative double.  When your partner opens the bidding with '1 club' and RHO overcalls '1 diamond' you can bid either '1 heart' or '1 spade' with just four cards.  If you have 4 hearts  & 4 spades then you make a NEGATIVE double two for one shot!.  If your RHO overcalls '1 heart' your bid of '1 spade' PROMISES a 5-card suit!  With just 4 spades you make a NEGATIVE double.

KUDOS & CONGRATULATIONS: My sincere thank you to Doug & Carol Hamilton for taking over directing many of the games while Bill & I were on vacation. Also thank you to Jill for taking over the running of the Studio.  And of course  thank you to all of you for keeping the games going.  BTW -we had a GREAT time and we are working on our 2017 Grand Slam Adventure, maybe you will join us!

THIS WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
Your RHO opens the bidding with 1-D and with this hand you make a take out double:
   S -  A K Q 5
   H K J 7 2
   D J
   C Q J 7 3
Your partner responds with 1-S and RHO passes.  What is your next call?

SOLUTION TO QUIZ from  Feb. 14th:
You are the declarer and you are in your hand for the last and need to win four tricks with this combination of spades:

     Dummy
     S A Q 10 2

     Declarer (you)
     S J 9 3

In what order will you play the cards?

Solution to card play:

Playing TOWARD the dummy - start with the S-9 from your hand.  If that wins you are in your hand and able to play the S-J and finally the S-3 to make sure you trap your LHO's King.

See you at the tables,
Kathie & Bill Halliday
