M C & G  Bridge Studio   17-Jan-2016

Dear Bill

TIP OF THE WEEK:  When partner leads an Ace or King and you hold Q J x x – play the Queen.  The play of the Queen to partner's lead promises the Jack (or a singleton).  Partner may now under lead their honour to have you on lead!  A discard of the King promises the Queen and denies the Ace.  The play of the Jack promises the 10 and denies the Queen.  Therefore it is unwise to discard a Queen or Jack to show a doubleton.
Don't forget to put in your TOONIE for the Dartmouth  Rotary - there was NO winner last week and this week the pot is over $1,000.00

KUDOS & CONGRATULATIONS: Kudos to Nancy Fraser and Trish Hattie my assistants for our "Bridge in a Day".  It was  a fun and successful day as we introduced many players to our wonderful game.  After several cancellations due to weather we still had 37 participants.  We will do this again in the Spring - so tell your friends.
Congratulations to the winners of the 22 table January "Up the Ranks": Shirley McInnes, Sue Pattillo, Deedee Dyer, Margaret Oulton.

THIS WEEK'S BRIDGE QUIZ:
You are sitting South and here is the auction:
North     East    South    West
                           C         pass
 1NT      pass      ?

What do you know about partner’s distribution?  What call do you make if this is your hand?
           S – A Q 7 3
           H – 8
           D – K Q
           C – J 8 6 4 3 2

Solution to Last Week's Quiz:
Your RHO opens the bidding with 1D, what call would you make with the following hand:
        S – 10 3
        H – A K J 10
        D – K 8 6 2
        C – 10 6 5

This is a tricky hand and I would likely bid 1 Heart!  Yes it is only a 4-card suit, but it is so rich in values and if the opponents win the auction -  I want partner to lead a Heart.  The risks of being doubled are slim as I have lots of Heart honours, my D-K also rates to be a working card as well.

See you at the tables,
Kathie & Bill Halliday
