artwork4.jpg   This week’s bridge quiz:

You open the bidding with 1 club, and partner responds 1NT.  What is your next call holding:

S – A K

H – Q 9 5

D – K 9 7

C – A Q 8 7 5

Solution to last week’s quiz:

Here is the auction:

  North          East              South            West (YOU)

Pass            pass              pass              ??   - sitting in the balancing seat.

What is your call holding:

                     S – A K J 10 6 5

                     H – 7 5

                     D  - A Q 9

                     C – Q 7

It is Standard bridge to open this hand in 4th seat2 Spades!  It makes sense NOT to pre-empt in 4th seat (why would you make a bid to earn a minus score when you could settle for a 0).  The standard agreement for bidding in the Balancing Seat is when holding a hand with a good 14 to about 18 points and a 6-card suit.  You plan on making the part score contract and if partner has any help you want to be in GAME.

See you at the tables,

Kathie & Bill Halliday
