Tip of the Week:

Discarding can be tough, but partners must work together.  If there are two suits to be protected, then you must divide the duties – when you let go of one suit, partner should save that one and when partner discards a suit, it is your duty to guard the other one.

   This weeks Bridge Quiz:

From the Audrey Grant Daily  Bridge Column – Quiz #101.  See her wonderful site – www.betterbridge.com

What is your opening bid holding the following hand:

S – A J 10

H – K Q 10

D – K 10 9

C – J 10 9 3

Solution to  Last  Week’s Quiz:

From the Audrey Grant Daily  Bridge Column – Quiz #101.  See her wonderful site – www.betterbridge.com

What is your opening bid holding the following hand:

S – K 10

H  - A Q 3

D – Q J

C – K 8 6 5 4 3

ANSWER:

It looks like you should open 1C – but it causes an inconvenient re-bid.  To make a Jump Rebid to 3C you would like your clubs to be of  better quality (like A K J 9 7 6) a source of tricks.  And to simply rebid 2C is a bit of  an under-bid.  So I like opening 1NT here, if you are uncomfortable with opening 1NT holding a 6-card club  suit, slip that C2 in with your spades and the hand if  a perfectly textbook balanced hand.
