M C & G  Bridge Studio   26-Oct-2014

Tip of the Week:

The FIRST trick can make or break a contract. . .PAY ATTENTION.  If you lead the Ace from Ace/King and see your partner play the 2 – you know partner does not have the Queen.  It could be very wrong to cash your other high honour and set up a FREE trick for declarer.  Look at partner’s attitude.  For the third hand player . .  look at partner’s high honor lead – if you can complete the sequence – play a HIGH encouraging card, if you cannot help – play a LOW discouraging card.  At least partner will know your points are not in their suit!

Congratulations & Kudos – Congratulations to Gerardo and Trisha Malazdrewicz for WINNING the North American Pairs – flight B.  Kudos to Jill McCormick for an awesome job with the 18 table Up the Ranks game today – and EVERYONE received some GOLD!!

  This Weeks Bridge Quiz:

Your partner opens the bidding with 1S and your RHO overcalls 2H.  What is your call with:

S – K J 7 5

H – 9 7 3

D – Q J 6 4

C – A 4

Solution to Last Weeks Quiz:

You hold the following hand and open the bidding with 1NT

S – A K 4 3

H – 10 7

D – K Q 8 4

C – A 8 4

You are playing transfers.  LHO passes and your partner bids 2 Diamonds, and your RHO DOUBLES.  What is your call?

Answer:

PASS! – partner has simply told you they HOLD a five card heart suit.  You cannot support a 5-card suit, and partner may have NO points.  To freely bid 2 hearts here would promise 3-card support.  Pass and await further developments.

See you at  the tables,

Kathie & Bill Halliday
