Tip of the Week:

The Reverse Bid (by opener) – this is a NON Jump bid which will force responder to choose one of your suits and IF responder must choose your first bid suit at the THREE level – you have made a reverse bid.  Hence, you must have the playing strength of at least 17 HCP.  By playing strength I am suggesting that with highly distributional hands - 6/5 etc – you can have less HCP if your Honour cards are in your bid suits.  FYI- Reverse bids are made with NON-balanced hands and the first bid suit is always longer than the second bid suit.  IF you have two suits of the same length – bid the higher ranking, then bid the lower ranking, even with 17 HCP – you should Jump Shift with 18 or more HCP (see last week’s tip).

Kudos of the Weekfirst Kudos goes to Ann and Cel Dicks - attending their FIRST sectional tournament!  Moncton NB was a great venue and the bridge was wonderful – Ann & Cel placed in pairs events and had a great time - even playing against some very highly ranked players – well done.  More Kudos to one of my favourite players Evelyn Campbell – what a trooper!! Evie had her headlamp on to make sure she could see her cards and play all day Friday and Saturday – you gotta love this game J

This week at  the Bridge Studio – come and play and earn TRIPLE masterpoints all week long – September is International Fund Month and all this week we have International Fund games. NO extra charge to the players but the Bridge Studio will be giving $1.00 from each player to the CBF International Fund (that fund is for any players representing Canada in World competition).  And YOU get the benefit of TRIPLE Masterpoints!!  So come and enjoy – no extra charge to you!!  ALL week at the Bridge Studio!!

This Week’s Bridge Quiz:

Your partner opens  the bidding with 1NT.

What is your call holding:

S – K 10 4

H – 3

D – K Q J 9 6 5 3

C – A Q

Solution to  Last Week’s Quiz:

Your partner opens the bidding with 2NT.

What is your call holding:

S – J 4

H – Q 7 3

D – K 10 7 4

C – A Q 8 4

Answer:

Bid 4NT – this is an invitation for partner to bid slam.  You have 12 HCP and partner has either 20 or 21.  Slam is extremely likely and partner will accept the invitation on almost any hand except 20HCP and 4-3-3-3 distribution.  4NT here is 1 level above game and a slam invitation – not Ace asking.
