North might open 3, but the spots are poor and side four card spade suit is a defect. If North passes, East could open 1 or 1 reasonably. If 1, South has a heavy 2 overcall, West a raise and North can now chime in with 3 (expecting some diamond support as South is presumably short in spades). East now might bid 3 or 4 with his shapely hand. If he did jump to 4, would likely push South into bidding 5 (or perhaps 4NT if that would be takeout, to offer a choice between diamonds and hearts).

5 is an excellent contract, but beaten by the bad break (and those poor diamond spots we mentioned earlier).

Note that 4X can held to 7 tricks (so beaten 500), but the defense has to be a little careful. They have to tap declarer to kill the club suit, but also have to play one round of trumps one of 3 times they are in with club tricks. Otherwise declarer can cross-ruff 8 tricks.

Whether North opens 2 or not, with a side four card major, is a matter of partnership agreement. Certainly if one the high honors were in s instead, it would be more reasonable to pass. If North passes, East might open there 6-5 hand with either 1 or 2. In that case, South will certainly compete, but it will be a lot harder for N/S to get to game, as South will not necessarily know that their side has a useful fit. Given how poor the North's suit is and how good their suit is, I would choose to open 2. Whether East bids or not, South should force to game. If South has a way to find out how good North's suit is, they could take that route. After all, if North's suit is AKQxxx, then slam in s should be a good prospect even if North has shortness. If East overcalls, though, South might just jump to 4, making it difficult for E/W to find out if they should be bidding further in s. Should East overcall if North opens 2? It's certainly not clear. The 6-5 distribution and the void suggest bidding. However, the hand is pretty weak on defense, and bidding 3, possibly burying a five card suit isn't perfect. Neither is it perfect to bid your shorter suit first, so East will have to make a decision. If East had six s and five s, then I think it would be an easy overcall.

The fate of a contract will depend partly on the opening lead. If the defense starts with two rounds of s, declarer will likely ruff and pull trump, planning to cash a high and then play a low when if the Queen doesn't come down. The bad break will force declarer to instead take a finesse, but the end result should still be making ten tricks. On most other leads, declarer should be able to scramble home 10 tricks. If West leads a , declarer can immediately rough a , and will end up with 11 tricks. Bidding game should be above average, and +450 should be close to a top, barring E/W getting in trouble in s and getting doubled.

All pass

South will be playing in 1NT at many tables, though at some West will have a way to show a four card major and a longer minor, which should lead to North competing in s, or North will sign off in 3 over a silent West. With a 6-4 hand and all their honors in the long suits, it looks right for North to correct 1NT to 3, and certainly North should compete if West bids over 1NT. A contract will have either three or four losers, depending on whether declarer gets the suit right. However, a 1NT contract is much more interesting, from a defensive standpoint. Assume that E/W are using fourth best leads and that West leads the 6. East will win with the King, and assuming that they continue the suit, should continue with the 2, promising an original four card suit. After West wins, what should happen next? If West cashes another high , many players will reflexively play low from the East hand. However, the 9, East's only remaining , will now be the high card in the suit, and West will not be able to cash both of their s. This is a situation known as "blocking" the suit, whereby the length in a suit cannot be used because the long suit has no higher cards then the lowest card in the short suit. A good East player will see this coming and will play the 9 under the Ace, a play known as "unblocking" the suit. Other than a lesson on blocking, why is this particularly interesting on the actual hand? Because here, West has a certain entry in s and desires a lead through South. So, even if East unblocks the 9, West should lead the 3 next, forcing East to win, with no s left. East should recognize that West wants a side suit led, and looking at dummy, the natural suit is s. As it happens, East has a normal switch anyway, but if East had a more ambiguous holding, should still lead a . Curiously on this hand, the suit will now be blocked. Assuming declarer keeps four s in the South hand, the defense will only be able to run three tricks.

If East switches to s earlier in the hand, both s and s can be untangled. Is this realistic, other than East just choosing to lead a at trick two? I think it would take a very good defensive pair to achieve this. At trick three, West should lead one of their low s to East. East will need to understand the implications of West's spot card play, and overtake the 8 with the 9, or the 3 with the 5. When East then switches to the Q, this should promise the Jack. Why? Because with both East and West knowing that East has a second entry in s, there is no reason for East to lead their highest unless they have an honor sequence. Assuming E/W remain on the same wavelength, West can lead a LOW back, promising the 10 and East can win with the Jack, cash the 9 and lead a back to West (E/W having carefully made sure that they have communication in both directions.) Voila, defense is easy!!! Ok, so this takes a LOT of good assumptions and good play by E/W and in practice, I think nine tricks on defense will only be made if South pitches too many s, allowing West to overtake the 9. Defenders who cash five s ending in the West hand without leading s from the East will have a relatively poor score.

N/S will probably get to 3NT whether West overcalls 2 or not, but you might be surprised that I haven't suggested 2 bid in the bidding diagram. One of the few ways in which experts are less aggressive than advancing players is in making two level overcalls. Here, the vulnerability is terrible for West, their hand overall is not even a full opening count, and the suit is poor quality. Some might argue that a sixth is an advantage, but in point of fact, for a two level minor suit overcall, a six card suit is expected. The only advantage to bidding 2, is that some pairs have a hard time dealing with a 2 overcall of 1 if they don't have both majors, and thus the opponents might be kept out of a contract, but that is outweighed by the disadvantages. If West does bid 2, the N/S bidding is likely to continue 2-3-3-3NT and the final contract will be the same, albeit declared by South. If West passes, South isn't quite strong enough to rebid 3 over 1. Should South bid 2 or 3? Despite having a 7th , it looks better to bid 2, hoping this doesn't get passed, as a 3 bid next will show the distribution and hand strength pretty closely. North doesn't have a great bid over 2, but is too strong to just pass, with solid holdings in both majors, and 2NT looks best, despite the shortness. Knowing that North has only an invitational hand, South can just make a pragmatic bid of 3NT. It's hard to construct many hands for North whereby they have a stopper, and 6 is till a good contract, and risking a 3 bid unless this is 100% forcing would be too dangerous for me.

E/W are likely to play in a major suit game, though some will stop in a partscore. For some pairs, West will have an opening 1 opening, and now E/W will quickly get to 4. In this case, East is likely to declare the contract, and if South leads their singleton , it will remove the guess in that suit for declarer. If South somehow finds another lead, then the contract will come down to guessing the Queen. If West passes originally, North will open 1 and East will have to decide what to do. Despite the unfortunate distribution in the minors, with a 14 HCP and both majors, I don't see how East can pass, and I would double, being prepared to claim that I had some s in with my s if partner ends up bidding a lot of s! South might be able to bid 2 showing a weak hand, but either way, West has a good enough hand to invite and ask East to choose a major, by cue bidding. Assuming South has passed, and West bids 2, the East hand is now much better knowing that West has at least invitational values and should have both majors. East can cue bid 3 back, to insure that if West is 5-4 in the majors, they play in the nine card fit, while also confirming the values for game. The end result should be a contract of four in a major, most likely s, declared by West. In this case, with North having opened the bidding, declarer should play North for the Queen, and end up making their contract. Any E/W pair who don't get to game, or who go down by getting the suit wrong, will end up with a poor score. +620 should be a relatively common E/W score, with some pairs going +170, and certainly some +140 and -50 scores as well.

Marty Fleisher/ Chip Martel Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
MartyChipChipMarty
Pass12Pass
Pass4All pass

West might open 3, then North would likely bid 4 closing the auction. We chose not to, so North got to open . Now East could open 1 or 2, but particularly opposite a passed hand, 2 seems better: it takes away North/South space and lets partner know there is no game. The main downside is it might get partner to take an expensive save in 4. South passes over 2 hoping partner will double, but North with such an offensive hand gambles only a little to take a shot at 4.

East might reasonably lead anything but a trump. On a diamond lead, declarer will win in dummy, throw two clubs on spades, take the heart finesse and make 5. A spade lead will allow two club discards, and declarer will then lose a trick in ,, and to make 4. Only a club lead gives the defense a chance. Even then, if West reasonably plays 3 rounds of clubs, the contract makes. Whether East ruffs high or not, dummy will have an entry to throw declarer’s losing to make 4. Note the power of dummy’s 64 if West ruffs high and leads his 5. The only sure winning defense is for West to win the club lead to play a diamond, then play another diamond when in with the A. That works here, but could give declarer the contract if partner had say Q9 instead of K5

After 1-1, North has a fairly model preemptive 3 bid (if 3 has some other meaning, North has no very good bid, so might just Pass hoping to bid hearts later). East raises spades and South decides to gamble 4 hoping for say x KQJxxxx xxx xx. West has a good hand and might reasonably DBL or bid 4. Here DBL is right in theory but probably wrong in practice.

If East, normally, leads a (high) spade or a diamond, declarer will be able to win in dummy and take a ruffing spade finesse, then get back to dummy to throw his club loser on the spade ten. Only a club lead lets the defense take its 4 tricks.

Pass1Pass2
All pass

After partner's 2 rebid North has decent values, but the singleton diamond is a big negative as it makes it harder to develop partner’s suit. Taking 10 tricks in diamonds is easy, but 9 in notrump is not, even with the cards friendly (diamonds 3-2 with the Ace onside, K onside, a likely friendly club lead). If North does bid 2NT South will raise to 3.

After a low club lead to the 9, diamond to the K and then ducked to the A, East can switch to the J. Dummy can win the K and set up the s, but when West gets in, the 9 through declarer lets the defense take 3 hearts and beat 3NT.

Non-vul it is a reasonable gamble for East to respond 1NT to try to make it harder for North/South to find their (likely) spade fit. With a weak suit and vulnerable, South might still bid 2, but that is pushy. After a Pass, and West’s 2 bid, East would like to bid a preemptive 3, but since 3 is invitational, it is too likely to get East/West overboard. After East passes, South now balances, West competes to 3, and North risks 3. West might fear he is being stolen and DBL hoping for the magic +200. East might also bid 4 with his offensive oriented hand.

If the defense starts with 4 rounds of hearts, declarer can ruff high in dummy and play A and a spade, eventually throwing a club on the diamond winners. If West instead shifts to a club at trick 3, declarer must get rid of the club loser before losing the lead by cashing the A, then play 3 rounds of diamonds. If declarer judges the play this well, East/West will wish they had bid 4 instead of passing out 3
