  1. 15-17 high card points

Oh good, we start off this week with and easy deal⸮ I don't know (idk) how many players will open 2 with North's hand, or if it even makes a difference in "the auction", East will overcall 2NT and West will still bid 3NT. BUT it makes huge difference in "the play" of this deal. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: The auction is easy East with 16 hcp and a balanced hand opens 1NT and West with 8 hcp and two 5-card minors bids 3NT. For the auction presented here North does not open 2 and South does not overcall 2 after 1NT.

Play: The play of this deal depending on actions by North or South could be different. If North opens 2 and with the opening lead of the 8 dealer (East) has timing on his side and Makes 4. With the natural opening lead of the J (internal sequence) as presented here East only Makes 3. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com.

  1. 2/1 Game Force
  2. High Reverse

This is not an easy slam to bid (and tricky to play). If after 1 - 2 North rebids either 2NT or 2 getting to slam will be unrealistic, however, in the auction presented here if North rebids 3 then 6 stands a good chance. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding:
In the auction here North opens 1, South makes a 2/1 GF bid of 2 and North bypasses 2 (weak unbalanced) and 2NT (weak balanced) to bid 3 (a high Reverse ). In a traditional auction the high reverse would show 15+ high card points or a king better than an opening hand, but after 2/1 bid it just shows good solid values (maybe 14-15 hcp) i.e., not a weak hand (12-13 hcp).

South rebids 3 and North having already stated his values bids game of 4. South bids 4NT as RKC Blackwood and North shows 1 keycard with 5, South bids 5 asking about the Q and North with a very key bid, bids 6 (going past 5) showing the Q and the K.

Play: The play on this deal is a squeeze. After the rectification of the count giving up a club to the A, if West holds the K and the Q West is squeezed and cannot hold enough cards to protect both cards.

  1. Weak Two-Bid
  2. Takeout Double

Unlike Board 5 getting to 6 on this deal will be tough if not impossible. And unlike Board 1 where North did not open 2, in this deal East will most surely open 2. South gives the partnership the best possible chance presented here taking action over 2 with a balanced 13 high card points , but it will just be hard for a balanced 16 hcp opposite a balanced 13 hcp to find slam.

BTW, it is not really a bad slam only requiring finding either the finesse against the Q or the K to take 12 tricks. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: In the auction here East opens 2 and South makes a bold move making a Takeout Double of 2 with a balanced 13 hcp. If there is a chance at slam, North with 16 hcp must take some action over the take out double other than just bidding 4 as presented here. What action might North take to get to slam, maybe a 3 cuebid would do it.
