  1. 15-17 high card points

This week starts off with a difficult auction. You can read and study all the bridge books on the shelf, but there comes a point where time at the table (experience) comes into play. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1NT with 15-17 hcp, South makes a minor suit transfer (4-way transfer) of 2NT to 3 and West overcalls 3 (*&$#!). North holding AKQ10 could could certainly accept the transfer to clubs with 4, but this will take the the auction past 3NT. So what action can North take to describe his hand and yet, conserve space. North could bid 3 saying I have a spade stopper and implying I do not have a heart stopper. But I don't think 3 will show support for clubs.

There is a pretty common understanding when seeking a 3NT contract that if the opponents have bid one suit, a cuebid of that suit would be an "asking bid" (much like a Western cuebid ) asking partner if partner has a stopper in the opponent's suit to bid 3NT. North's double of 3 comes about as close to this agreement as possible ... 3x should mean 1) I don't have a heart stopper do you 2) not for penalty (see no. 1) 3) if you have hearts consider this a protective double 4) if all else fails I have support for clubs i.e., if you don't want or cant sit for the double it is safe to bid clubs. So South has the option of sitting for the double or bidding 3NT, change the vulnerability and South should probably sit for the double.

Play: Not much to the play of the hand, surely East will make a club lead and declarer (North ducks to the 10 in hand and the heart suit is dead. All West will now win is the Q and A. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com.

  1. would really like to bid 4

This is a hard deal to justify slam even with North having a 4-card fit in hearts and a void in clubs ... give North the K instead of the Q and it might be possible, but not with North holding only 7 high card points and two of the points the Q. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: After 1 opening and 2 overcall, North is just too weak to make a Splinter of 4, and so, North just raises hearts to 2. South with 18 support points is happy to bid 4.

Play: Making 6 on this deal is tricky, it requires setting up some kind of diamond trick finessing against the J or spade finesse against the J. I think most will make 5 on this deal.

Bidding: Everybody should get to 4 on this deal. In the auction here, South opens 1NT and North makes a Jacoby Transfer of 2 to 2 and then invites with 3. South with 4-hearts accepts the invitation to 4.

  5. 4 spades but not 4 hearts

Here is a pretty legit slam ... should be easy to bid. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: South opens 2NT with 20 hcp (West should not overcall) and North bid 3 as Puppet Stayman. South responds 2 showing 1 or 2 4-card majors. North bid 3 showing 4 hearts and South bids 3NT shoing his 4-card major is spades (no major suit fit). North could go through some ace/keycard asking or bid 4NT as Quantitative notrump bids but with 11 hcp, North bids 6NT in the auction here.
