  1. see discussion re: opening 2
  2. 1NT Forcing (semi-forcing)

We always hear the idiom "bid a suit with length and values", but what if your values are not in your long suit. We start off this week with a deal where the values are not in the suit you are bidding. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: After three passes, West opens the bidding 1 (some might open 2, but more on this later) and East responds 1NT Forcing which tends to be non-forcing (or semi-forcing) by a passed hand (BPH). West has has an awkward hand with really good values of 15 high card points , but 7 hcp in the AK with no support and the singleton Q which looks like wasted values , so West's rebid is 2 not 3. The bid of 2 accounts for the misplaced values. It also accounts for why the opening bid is 1 and not 2*.

If partner cannot take further action over the rebid of 2 then a jump to 3 with misplaced values may very well place the contract too high. But, good news East makes an invitation with 3 and West can fully bid his values with 4.

* If you don't understand the 2, email me or ask/comment on Bridge Winners.

Play: With perfect defense, North/South have the right to win A and the A, but it is not unreasonable for North not to want to lead away from his diamond or club holdings, and thus, allowing declarer (West) to pitch the Q. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com.

  1. Jacoby 2NT
  2. preemptive
  3. penalty oriented

At the Charlotte Regional one year, Donna Rodwell introduced me to this guy from Atlanta (name withheld to protect the innocent) and suggested we might play. So this guy was checking up on me and talked to one of my regular tournament partners Marty Nathan. Marty says, expect one off-the-wall deal. So here it is the off-the-wall deal. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding:
South opens 1 and North bids 2NT as Jacoby 2NT. With a void in hearts and 5½ losers , East now bids 4 which puts South under pressure to bid 5 or double 4. Partnership should have some agreement on 4x but is might mean for penalty showing a defensive trick in spades, where a PASS would be forcing for partner to take action. With East/West vulnerable (red vs. white) North sits for the double.

At 5x this might be a really bad auction for East to intercede, but 4 is a good bid, if partner redoubles 4xx for SOS East can run to 5. With equal length in spades and diamonds, East might consider a bid of 4 (lol), but with 7 spades, I like 4.

Play: East is lucky in finding partner with the A and a diamond fit, actually making 4x. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com.

Not many legitimate slams this week, so lets look at a really nice slam. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: With 21 hcp, 8 controls, 4 losers and a strong one-suited hand many will open East's hand 2 (and I would not blame them) in which case the bidding might go 2 - 2NT (some players may have a special meaning for 2NT) | 3 (shows a real club suit) - 5 | 6 or East might convert it to 6NT but it is unrealistic for this auction to get to 7 or 7NT on a combined 31-32 hcp.

But if East opens 1* the bidding should still get to slam and maybe 7. In the auction here the auction is similar to the opening 2 auction, but in this auction over the 1 opening 2NT shows a much better hand than after opening 2 and East can go straight to 4 (asking bid). In the auction here 4 is treated as Gerber and 4 shows 1 ace. I would treat 4 as Minorwood but the response would still be 1 keycard. With partners showing 10-11 hcp and the A I think 7 (the baby grand) is a great call.

* No, I am not concerned 1 would get passed out, someone will bid 1M.

7 by East
