This week starts off with what should be a pretty straight forward notrump auction. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com/.

Bidding: North with 16 hcp, 6 losers and good body cards opens the bidding 1NT and most playing East will either bid 2 as natural or take some action (e.g., Double or 2) to show a single suited hand. Over 2 as natural (as in the auction here) with a stopper in clubs and 9 hcp some might bid 2NT as invitational* with South's hand, but with a good 5-card diamond suit, South should just bid 3NT. All North needs to likely make 3NT will be a high honor in diamonds (either A or K) and a half stopper in clubs.

* Even if South bids 2NT, North should bid 3NT.

Play: Some might defend 3NT with an opening lead of 4th best in clubs, but with what looks like a entry in spades and the intermediate 10 East in play here gets aggressive an leads out with the A. Depending on partnership agreements towards the lead of the A vs K and signals to show attitude or count the opening of this play may vary. West in the play here signals negative for clubs and East has to decide on a course of play and switches to the Q.

This is a very interesting deal. After South opens 1NT North with a notrump opening hand should get this deal to slam, but which slam? Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com/.

Bidding:
South with 17 hcp and 7 losers opens the bidding 1NT and for some (maybe many) North just might ignore the 5-card spade suit and bid 4NT (as Quantitative notrump bids ) in which case South will accept with 6NT. I hope the auction does not go 1NT - 6NT at any table.

If North's spade suit was crappy, sitting North I might ignore it, but North holds QJ1098 a nice suit. So in the auction here North transfers to spades and rebids the A (game forcing). When South shows spade support with 3, North bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood for spades and South responds 2 keycards without the Q. In the auction here North (missing a keycard) bids 6 (the safe slam), but wait ... North could still convert to 6NT.

Play: I don't know (idk) what other would lead against 6 or 6NT, but in any of the auctions discussed here, I would lead the 9. Against a slam, I would never lead a club away from the K and I think the same strategy is that I would not lead away from the J98xx. In any of the auctions discussed here, the defense screams for the lead of a major and if anyone has 5 hearts, it is not unrealistic to think my partner has 5 hearts.

As it turns out the lead of a heart gives nothing away in the play of this deal. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com/.

The bidding on this deal could go a number of ways. Surely N/S will find there heart fit and E/W will find their club fit. What is uncertain is how the high-level bidding will go. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com/.

Bidding: West opens 1 and North makes a weak jump overcall of 2. East bids 3 and South competes to 3. Maybe West doesn't cuebid hearts, but bids clubs instead. Either way South with a void in clubs, not vulnerable, should be willing to compete to 5 and West with a void in hearts should be willing to compete to 6. It is arguable that 6 will be doubled, but if West made a cuebid of 4 North should not double even holding two aces.

  1. asking about the quality of hearts

I some controversy in bridge. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com/.

Bidding: East opens 1 and assuming South stays out of the auction West bids 1, yes, 1. East with 14 high card points and 5 losers makes a jump rebid to 3. No doubt 3 is a questionable bid by East, but 2 understates the playing value of this hand (5 losers) and 2 misrepresents the shape of this hand (6 hearts). West could take alternative action such as RKC Blackwood , which would be fine, but in this auction bids 5 as slam invitational specifically asking East about the quality of hearts.

6 by East

Play: With hearts splitting 3-2, only 1 spade loser. An opening lead of a spade promotes the K and a non spade allows declarer (East) to pitch a spade on the K.
