  1. Splinter
  2. control bid

Very often there is more than one way to bid a hand. The challenge becomes finding the best way ... so how is "the best way" defined i.e., what measurement might be used to define "the best way" to bid a hand? In its simplest form the best way of bidding would be the bid that most accurately defines a hand. This definition could be expanded, but for now, lets leave it as finding the bid that most accurately defines a hand. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1 and East with 10 high card points and a really good spade suit KQ1096 overcalls 1. So how does South best define his hand? Probably the most common strategy would be for South to first cuebid 2 showing a fit in hearts with limit raise or better values, and then, making a forcing bid to show game, if not slam interest. But in the auction here South makes a jump cuebid of 3 which in this auction has to be a game forcing Splinter, but giving so much more information. The jump cuebid not only show shortness in spades but also shows a 4-card (or better) fit with North. North with minimal values attempts to signoff in 4 but South presses on with a control bid of 5 and in the auction here North bids 6.

Anybody who has followed my dribble here, should know by now I minor suit slams. So here is the perfect example where 3NT will probably not be more than average and the small slam will be a top on this board. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: Most auctions on this deal will go something like 1 - 1 | 1NT - 3NT, making 4 from the South. But after South's rebid of 1NT there is no reason for North to just jump into 3NT. So after the 1NT rebid, depending on partnership agreements, North should make a forcing bid either describing North's hand (natural) or to get South to further define South's hand (artificial), i.e, keep the auction going!

After South's rebid of 1NT, using natural methods, North is limited 3 would be invitational leaving 2 as about the only natural forcing bid. Using more modern artificial methods North could use 2 as New Minor Forcing or XYZ to force the auction and then support clubs.

  1. Jacoby 2NT
  2. no interest in slam
  3. control bid

This slam should be easy to bid, the question is can 7 be bid. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: When North opens 1 South wit 19 high card points , 20 support points and 4 Quick Tricks should know this deal is going to slam. So South bids Jacoby 2NT to maintain captaincy and get North to further define his hand. When North rebids 4 (standard Jacoby response), showing no interest in slam 7 does not look to be encouraging. When South continues the bidding by control bidding the A it is now all up to North. If North bids 6 that is all this auction will take, North will have said "no mas" twice and South will pass. If however, North will control bid the A on the way, then I think this deal has a real chance of getting to 7.

Play: As is in most slam, there is no difficultly in the play of the contract. Hearts set up for a pitch of a diamond from North's hand and declarer (North can ruff a club in South's hand.

If North/South do not get into this auction, 4 should be an easy game to bid. That being said when N/S do get into the auction, 4 should be an easy game to bid. :) Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding: West opens the bidding 2 as a Weak Two-Bid. North doubles for takeout and East makes a 2NT bid which should be asking West to further define his hand. So West has no better descriptive bid than to rebid hearts, 3. North with admittedly a great hand, decides to try one more time and doubles again. East (sly devil) passes in tempo and South is forced to bid 3. East should now either double 3 for penalty or bid 4.

A lot of slams today! Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com.

Bidding:
After three passes South opens the bidding 1. Some will consider opening 2 in fourth seat to show an opening hand rebiddable in spades, but the 2 bid in fourth seat is still a preemptive bit (limiting opener's values) to keep the opponents out of the bidding. North's hand is waaaaay too good to make a preemptive or limiting bid of 2. When South makes a Drury bid of 2 and then goes on to game, North with 18 high card points and 5 losers should get to slam.
