  1. preference
  2. major suit contract

For many this should be an easy deal. An opening bid should have a planned rebid. If North opens this deal 1, there is no logical rebid, and thus, North must plan ahead by opening this deal 1 with the planned rebid of 2. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1 and after South responds 1, if West stays out of the auction, North can rebid 2, South shows a preference for diamonds with 2 and North with 3-spades places the contract in 2.

If West jumps into the auction, however, then all bets are off. For some West might bid 1NT as a natural overcall, but many experienced partnerships will play that 1NT is conventional to be a Sandwich Notrump for the two unbid suits. For partnerships that play a Sandwich Notrump, West might double for takeout in which case E/W might find a heart fit.

  1. natural game try

This deal is not as easy as it looks ... everything depends upon on how North rates this hand. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: For some the auction might simply go 1 - 4 as a weak 10-card fit in spades a Bergen Raises Raises or LAW of Total Tricks type raise. Others as show here might give a simple raise and see if partner takes any action. If partner cannot take additional action, i.e., passes 2, then there is no reason that 4 should have been bid in the first place AND if partner takes additional action then it will be easy enough to then bid 4.

The big IF on this deal is if partner has a slam going hand 1 - 4 might miss slam, whereas, the 2 raise here just might get the partnership to slam.

Play: This deal is not hard to play. After winning the opening lead, declarer (South) goes to dummy with the K and finesses for the Q and that is all that is required, limiting the play to one heart loser.

  1. for spades
  2. reopening cuebid

Not all deal are straight forward bidding, bid-raise, bid-raise, bid-raise. In this auction, North has the ability to show a major suit and then, if a major suit fit is not found, support partner's minor. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East opens the bidding 1, South overcalls 1 (surely everybody will over call with quacks ) and West bids 1 ... now what will North do? If North supports diamonds right away the partnership will miss a spade fit and most likely, the contract. North has a good enough hand (16 support points in diamonds) to first show spades with a double and then IF REQUIRED compete with a 10-card diamond fit.

Play: This deal is not difficult top play, if the opening lead of the K is recognized as a singleton diamond. Declarer (South) wins the A and immediately goes for spades (forgetting any finesse) cashing the A and playing a second spade blocking a rough on diamonds.

Getting a top board is not just about bidding. Everybody should get to 3NT on this contract. So if everybody get to the same contract, then the play of the hand becomes soooo important. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 2 strong and forcing and rebids 2NT, now not hard to find 3NT.

Play: On the play of this deal, declarer (North) has only one entry to dummy with the K, and therefore, must make some kind of play. with diamonds 4-4 if the K is a doubleton Kx then declarer can not only create an entry to dummy, but create 2 additional diamond tricks. So after winning the opening lead, declarer shifts to diamonds playing the A (just in case the K drops and then leads a diamond finding West holding K9. It does not matter that East comes up with the J or not.

This deal is just an unlucky slam for most partnerships. Most partnership will find 6 when only 6 makes. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1NT and East overcalls 2. South would like to show both hearts and diamonds but must choose and the major suit is just natural bidding 3 as game forcing. They find the heart fit and after asking for keycards settle on 6. If there is any solace, most pairs that get to slam will find 6.
