Pass2NT2All pass
  1. weak jump overcall
  2. 18-19 high card points

This week starts off with a deal that fits nicely into the "knowing when to pass" category. When analyzing bridge bidding a lot of time is spent talking about the "what should be bid" category and not enough on the "knowing when to pass" category. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1 and East overcalls 2, as a weak jump overcall. If East had not overcalled at the 2-level, South would have bid 1, but South does not have enough values to bid 2 over 2 or even make a Takeout Double and rebid hearts (weaker). South makes the right decision and passes.

North reopens the bidding 2NT which shows 18-19 hcp, balanced hand and a diamond stopper. We know North's values are in the 18-19 hcp range, because with 15-17 hcp North would have opened 1NT instead of 1. Again South is put to the test, with 5 hcp it might be close to game, in fact, in teams (IMPS) South should bid 3NT, but this is pairs (matchpoints) and South again makes the right decision and passes.

Play: The play of this deal is not difficult, bases on the opening lead of J, declarer (North) could duck one round of spades but on the first or second round South wins the A and finesses for the K. With the K on side N/S can win 9 tricks.

  1. Fourth Suit Forcing (GF)
  2. some might bid 2NT
  3. rebiddable 6-card suit
  4. no extra values

I love minor suit slams ... and while South makes a valiant effort, this slam doesn't seem biddable. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North with a 4-4-3-2 distribution opens the bidding 1 and South bids 1. North rebids 1 and South bids 1 (or 2) as Fourth Suit Forcing (Fourth Suit Forcing ). North bids 2 here as checkback in case South really has spades (some might bid 2NT to show spade stopper). South with 16 high card points after 4SF makes a valiant effort with 3*, but North with no extra values bids 3NT and all pass.

* Many playing South will wrong side this auction by bidding 3NT instead of 3.

  1. forcing cuebid
  2. spade stopper
  3. forcing raise in diamonds
  4. control bid in spades
  5. not interested in slam

Because this auction shows a diamond suit fit it will get a little awkward, but will soon clear itself. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding:
North opens the bidding 1, 11 high card points and a 6-card major is too strong to treat as a Weak Two-Bid. East over calls 2 which shows an opening or near-opening hand. South is too weak to make a direct 2-level response of 2, so South first make a Negative Double with the plan to rebid spades showing 5+ spade and not 10 hcp. Confusing enough already?

West makes a 2 cuebid of hearts? Had East bid a major, it would be pretty clear that this cuebid is a limit raise in support of partner's bid major, but East didn't bid a major East bid a minor, and thus, the cuebid of 2 could look like a heart stopper looking for 3NT. East complies and bids 2 showing a spade stopper. Now West clears the auction up by bidding 3, showing for certain West has a limit raise or better in diamonds. East bid of 3 is showing first round control in spades, but with 2 dead hearts West returns to diamonds and East bids 5. You are probably at this point wondering what I am smoking, but this is a great minor suit auction where due consideration must be given to 3NT before arriving at 5.

Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
  PassPass
Pass1Pass31
Pass32Pass53
Pass6All pass
  1. Jump Showing Fit GF
  2. extra values & control in hearts
  3. slam invitational

OUTSTANDING ... a passed hand slam. It is not often a passed hand can make a game forcing bid and then invite for slam. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding:
So after three passes North opens the bidding 1. East passes (it is beyond my comprehension that East would make a Michaels Cuebid with 5 high card points ). South as a passed hand bids 3 as a game forcing jump showing fit in spades, with 4-spades and 5-diamonds. North with minimal values would bid 4, thus, 3 is a control bid showing the A and extra values 17 hcp and 20 support points . South's bid of 5is specifically asking about North's values in spades and with 2 of top 3 honors, North bid 6.
