1NT1All pass
  1. 15-17 high card points

We start this week off with a pretty ho-hum deal. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: Some might open South's hand 1, but typically opening 1m light in third seat is just nonsense. It has no preemptive value and just gives fourth seat the opportunity to overcall 1M (and get into the auction) when they could not have opened the bidding. The only redeeming value to opening 1 light is you could pass responders bid of 1 or 1, but opening 1 with shortness in diamonds (singleton K) makes no sense.

After 3 passes, West opens the bidding 1NT (15-17 hcp) and all pass. There would be some consideration for East to get into the auction with 6 diamonds, but with 5 diamonds just pass.

Made 2 — NS −120

Play: The play on this deal works out really fine for 1NT. The partnership holds double stoppers in the black suits and the lead of a diamond works in declarer's (West) favor. Regardless what is lead, even a heart, E/W are entitled to win 2-spades + 4 diamonds + 2 clubs for eight tricks, Making 2.

  1. Reverse
  2. 5 hearts and 4 spades

This is a really unfun deal for East. For East to have both major suits and not find a fit is just .... frustrating, at best. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: West opens the bidding 1 with the plan to Reverse into diamonds to show 16 high card points and typical reverse shape with clubs longer than diamonds. After responder (East) bids 1 then 2 in response to the reverse this looks like a game forcing auction and West just bids 2NT. When East rebids hearts 3 West just bids 3NT.

Without West reverse, East bid of 2 might show extra values, but after the reverse East is just making the best descriptive bid of his hand. When West reverses and then bids 3NT West has defined his values and then limited his hand to reverse values. East with just opening values sits for 3NT.

Play: West with all four suits bid makes his best attempt of helping partner by trying to clear the diamond suit, but to no avail. N/S are entitled to win AK and A for E/W Making 4.

  1. preemptive and "to play"

WOW, depending on partnership agreements, there are a lot of ways this deal might be bid. If the E/W partnership played Namyats , East would open the bidding 4 for hearts. But if the partnership does not play Namyats, 1 seems the best opening bid. However, with 4 losers some might be tempted to open 2. I don't think 2 is wrong, but the auction just might still get to 4. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: In the auction presented here East chooses to open 1. South should maybe make a Takeout Double , but in this auction bids 2 with the plan to rebid spades to show opening values and both black suits. North raises to 3, no real opportunity to show spades. AND East says enough of this foolishness and bids 4. All East needs is to fin partner with 1 trick to make 4, but if partner does not have 1 trick it is probably the opponent's auction and 4 makes it difficult for the opponents.

  1. Jacoby 2NT

Everybody loves to bid slams. If there is a key to bidding slams is the ability of the partnership to define fits and values. Typically, one partner will either "define or limit values" and the other partner (often with undefined values) then must assume captaincy for the auction. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1 and South responds with Jacoby 2NT which shows 4-card support and full opening values 13+ high card points . The are many versions of Jacoby 2NT around, but in my version where other 4-card raises like Bergen Raises or splinters might fudge values 2NT shows full opening values but not a specifically balanced hand. In response to 2NT North responds 3 which denies shortness and shows extra values of in this deal 16 support points (defines North's hand). South (the undefined hand) with 20 support points bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and North shows 2 keycards and the queen of trump. South with open tenaces in spades AQ10 and clubs AQJ is not interested in 7.

Play: The play of this hand is not complex on the lead of the 4 South does not believe that East is leading away from the K against a slam but it might be a singleton. And therefore, declarer (North) rises with the A and the K drops. When in 6 it is fool Hardy to duck the club just incase East is leading a singleton and can ruff the second club.

WOW, a baby grand! Bidding minor suit slams is often difficult for partnerships because they are first looking for major suit or notrump contracts. Often this means the partnership does not look for minor suit contracts until the 3-level (or even 4-level). AND this baby grand slam is no different. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding:
West opens the bidding 1 with the plan to Reverse into diamonds. YES, West only has 15 high card points , but with a 4 loser hand this hand is good enough to reverse. AND NO, I would not open this hand 2. Two suited hands are hard enough to bid without taking away valuable bidding space.

Like Board 3, 2 is bidding out shape. After 3, 4 shows a fit and is RKC Minorwood and 4 the second step show 0 or 3 keycards. After partner's reverse and East holding 18 support points and all 5 keycards, the Q of trump, plus 2 kings East bids 7.

  1. diamonds and a major

So we end this week, as we started on a ho-hum deal, or maybe not? Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: Some might open East hand 3, but lets pretend not. South opens 1NT and West with a crappy hand bids 2 as diamonds and a major. East bids 2 and West bids 2, East has little alternative but to bid 3 ... OMG how did two crappy hands bid so much on this deal. So E/W end up in 3 after all but this time doubled.

I point all the fault on this auction to West for the 2 bid with 8 high card points , but West will give you the bridge whine "but I had such good shape". LOL
