Play: Like many slams, the hard part is bidding slam, the play is much easier. Playing matchpoints bridge, North should really consider leading the 10, unlikely with the auction above, but South could have the AK and cash two spade tricks.

Playing victory points bridge (teams) the lead of the K is 100% correct. In pairs the object is to play for the best score, holding this slam to making 6. In teams the object is to beat the contract.and with the lead of the K is it is possible when partners wins the A he can return a diamond beating the contract.

  1. 1NT Forcing F1
  2. upper limit of range

I like 1NT Forcing (1NT Forcing ) auctions. I have heard from my friend Marty Nathan in Atlanta about the evils of 1NTF ... OMG don't get him started. I learned to like 1NTF via Max Hardy and learning 2/1 Game Forcing. Maybe I am misguided, but like the the fact that it sets captaincy of the auction and has system responses. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: West opens the bidding 1 and East makes a 1NTF response planning to rebid 2 if West responds clubs or to raise diamonds or hearts. When West responds 2, East with 4-card support for hearts and 10 support points raises to 3 ... how difficult can this auction be? West with 18 support points bids 4, easy peasy .

Play: Trying to make 5, the line of play here creates a funky cross-ruff between diamonds and clubs. Maybe some can find a better line of play from West hand to make 5.

Lets look at Board 9 and Board 10, they have a lot in common. In each deal E/W have game going values, they have a heart fit, etc etc But the auctions are much different and the play much different. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: After 2 passes, South opens the bidding 1 and West with 16 high card points , 4 losers and 7-hearts first makes a Takeout Double with the plan to rebid hearts to show values and hearts. In the meantime East jumps to 2 showing good values (depending on partnership agreements 8, 9 or 10+ hcp) and a spade suit. West bids his hearts at 3 and then 4 showing the willingness to play hearts opposite a singleton or a void.

Made 4 — NS −620

Play: Double dummy 4 can be beat with the lead of the 10, but in this auction with East bidding spades twice, the lead of a spade is not an easy lead. It would be more likely that North would lead a heart to shorten ruffing values, but the lead of a heart would not be a good lead either. North as no really good options other than a spade, maybe some will find the spade lead, but not in the auction presented here.

Just like in Board 9 South opens 1 but in Board 10 West does not have the values to make a Takeout Double and overcalls 1. West simple over call allows N/S to compete in spades and the bidding gets ugly. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens 1, West with opening values simply overcalls 1, North responds 1, East raises 2 and South raises 2 EITPTWIF. might argue with this auction, but West rebids 3 to show opening values and North makes a preemptive bid of 4. It is possible some might pass 4 vulnerable, but I think just as likely some will compete to 5.

EITPTWIF - everybody in the pool, the water is fine.

Play: For E/W to beat 4 East must lead a diamond (from the blind). In the auction presented here West shows both hearts and clubs, soooooooo, East might find a diamond lead (but doubtful) and N/S would then make 4.

  1. balancing double

Not enough attentions is given to competitive bidding. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1, and East using the concept that discretion is the better part of valor initially passes. South bids 1NT (not a forcing bid) and after two passes East makes a balancing double. The result on this board confuses "good score" vs. "good bridge". Holding QJ85 it was right for East to initially pass, but with an opening hand of 13 high card points and 7 losers and 4-3 in the majors, East should balance on this auction and not let N/S buy the contact for 1NT.

Down 1 — NS +100

Play: Double dummy (i.e., with perfect defense), N/S can only make 1NT for +90 and yes 2 Down 1 gives N/S a plus score of +100. But bridge is not perfect and I still think East should balance on this deal.
