  1. third seat opening
  2. 3-card Drury
  3. full opening hand

We start off this week with an auction, depending on partnership agreements, that should be easy to bid game.

Bidding: South, after two passes, opens the bidding 1. North with 11 high card points (12 support points ) and three hearts, has a 3-card limit raise in hearts. For partnership that play Drury, North's bid of 2 shows the limit raise and 3-card support (2 would be 4-card support) and asks opener (South) to further define his hand. South's bid of 2 shows a full opening hand (this is not a Reverse ) and shows 4 spades, otherwise, South could just bid 2 to show the opening hand and wait for North to take action. After finding South has a full opening hand, North is happy to bid 4 limiting North's values to game.

For partnerships that do not play Drury, North would need to jump to 3 instead of bidding 2. The 3 works fine for this deal because South has a full opening hand. Everybody should get to to 4.

Play: The play on this deal is tricky to Make 5. What declarer must do is play on diamonds right away and finesse for the J allowing dummy's (North's) diamond suit to be set up while still an entry with either A or Q.

  1. third seat opening

  3. natural
  4. RKC Blackwood (for spades)
  5. 2 keycards

Another third seat opening contract. As such, this may be difficult to get to slam.

Bidding: West open's the bidding in third seat 1. This time East uses Drury to force the auction, 2 is a a 3-card limit raise (or better) asking opener to further define his hand. In response to 2 West bids 3 (2 would have been artificial) showing a second suit in diamonds. East raises to 4 ... let me STOP here for a moment. With East's Drury bid the trump suit has been established as spades, ALL subsequent bidding is helping the partnership form a contract, BUT the final contract will be in spades. So after 3 - 4, the partnership knows they have a two-suited fit in spades and diamonds. West further knows that with two singletons West has a powerful 4 loser hand and goes slamming with 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood for spades. East responds 5 showing both the A and the A and West is happy to bid 6.

Play: I had a discussion from last week's write ups (on Bridge Winners) about "good slams" vs. "bad slams" ... all this slam needs is for diamonds to split 2-2. When 9 cards are known missing 4 cards what is the percentage the missing cards will split 2-2 (40.70%) and thus, that is the percentage of making this slam. Sooo Douglas Winship this is a 41% slam. The standard under which I judge good slams vs. bad slams comes from Ron Klinerger, in short 50% is a good slam, so this is not a good slam to bid. In the auction presented here West's bid of 3 was not a good bid because it was not a suit with values, just length. Give West K9743 and it makes the world of difference.

  1. simple raise (not Drury )
  2. forcing
  3. suit with length and values

The bidding on this deal, is very interesting. Some might open West hand 1, put the K in the club suit where clubs are AK1094 and I would open 1 even with an 8 loser hand. But I don't consider West's hand here as an opening hand, the values are scattered and 1 has no preemptive value.

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1, another third seat opening, and South bids 2 (not a Drury bid this time) and North rebids 2. If South had been an unpassed hand 1 - 2 | 2 would certainly look like a Reverse , but in this auction I am not so certain after South is a passed hand, 2 looks more like a game try. In any event 2 is be a forcing bid and the best descriptive bid South can make is 3.

North know that with a void in clubs the partnership's value are working (i.e., no wasted values in clubs) and bids 4.

Play: The play of this deal is tricky. With trumps AJ10985 opposite 743 declarer (North) would like to finesse the J and then the 10, but dummy only has two entries both in diamonds. With the opening lead of the J it looks like diamonds are split 3-2 with East holding Jx. Declarer can get to dummy twice but then the diamond suit is blocked unless hearts are 2-2 and the 7 creates an entry. But if hearts are 2-2 declarer can just cash two heart tricks.

Declarer can try to create an entry in spades but clearly who ever win the A will lead a second diamond and declarer must win in the wrong hand or block the suit. In the play here declarer just ops to play two rounds of hearts hoping to find either honor the K or Q as a singleton or find hearts split 2-2.

Another third seat opening but this time 1m. A third seat opening of 1m (in most circumstances) should be an opening hand. We might open light in third seat 1M because 1 or 1 has some preemptive value. But opening 1 or even 1 has no preemptive value so opening 1m should be an opening or near opening hand you will pass anything partner will bid.

Bidding: South opens 1, rebids 1 and then rebids 3. What is the shape of South's hand? Anytime you bid 3 suits naturally it should show a shortness (singleton or void) in the unbid suit, in this deal hearts.

So the bidding goes 1 West overcalls 1, South balances with 1 and after 2 passes North jumps in with 2 and South raises to 3. South's 3 should show good values (not game forcing values) and either 5-4-3-1 or 5-4-4-0 shape. After North bids 4 should South raise to 5 ... South has bid all of his values with 3. North should know everything about South's hand, if North cannot bid 5, South should not bid 5.

  2. strong two suiter

A little change of pace ... here is another one of those "can you bid it slams".

Bidding: South opens the bidding 3 and if West just overcalls 3 the bidding will go something like 3 with 3 overcall and West will (hopefully) bid 4.

But if over 3 West bids 4 as in the auction here, the bidding gets interesting. West bid of 4 is not a Michaels Cue Bid _cuebid">Michaels Cuebid but really more like a Leaping Michaels Cue Bid but still showing spades and a minor. East bids 5 his best minor and West converts to 5. In the auction presented here East bids 6 but could just as easily bid 6. East might choose to bid 6 to protect his KJ combination.

Made 6 — NS −1370

Play: To make 6 or 6 it takes a finesse for the K against the preemptive bidder (unexpected), it takes a successful finesse against the A (expected) and it takes a 2-3 split in diamonds. Not a very good slam to bid, but sure would be fun bidding and playing at the table.
