  1. simple raise 6-9 high card points
  2. game forcing rebid 18-19 hcp

So we start off this week with Board 1, a pretty exciting (blah blah) deal.

Bidding: After 3 passes West with 19 hcp and 5 losers opens the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid, depending on actions others might make, to define his values. For example, if East responds 1, West could jump rebid 2NT to show an 18-19 hcp balanced hand.

East with 8 hcp points and 3-card support for hearts, bids 2 only promising 6-9 hcp. West can do the math and comes up with enough for game and bids 4. This bid limits West hand and thus, it is up to East, to continue the auction or pass. East with only 8 hcp and no real leverage points, passes.

Play: So, double dummy it is easy to see N/S have the right to win three diamond tricks AKQ holding the contract to Making 4. But this defense requires North to find the lead of the Q from QJx. The Q is not an unrealistic lead (many may find this lead), but in this auction 1 - 2 | 4 North has no hint that the Q is the right lead. West did not try for any special game try or give any other hint of what might be a winning lead. Therefore, the lead of a spade might just as easily be a good lead which will allow declarer (West) to pitch a diamond on on the third club, Making 5.

Slams are not always the most fun deals, but I try to bid out as many slams as possible. This deal is very interesting and depends on partnership agreements and priorities. Should West respond 1 to East's opening bid of 1, hmmmm?

Bidding: Lets assume for a minute South does not over call 1 over East opening bid of 1. Then the auction might go (as below) ... and N/S should get to 6 (the courageous might find 6NT).

1 - 2 (forcing raise in clubs)
2NT (stoppers in both majors) - 2 responder's Reverse

But in the auction presented here South does over call 1. West cuebids 2 to create a forcing auction which might be temporizing but implies a fit in clubs. East in a forcing auction bids 3 as natural and West bids 3 as natural looking for a place to play the contract. West could try to go through an ace/keycard asking as presented here using RKC Minorwood (for clubs) or some might just jump to 6 or 6NT.

  1. 1NT Forcing
  2. 3 is to play

Knowing when to STOP bidding is just as important as knowing when to explore for game or slam. This is a textbook, 1NT Forcing auction.

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1 with the plan to rebid 2 (it is important to have a plan). South would like to bid clubs, but 2 would create a game forcing auction for 2/1 players and 3 or 4 would be preemptive and South with 9 high card points and 6 losers DOES NOT not have a preemptive hand. South makes a 1NT Forcing bid and then bids 3 to play.*

* South's bid of 3 denies 2 hearts.

  1. Fourth Suit Forcing
  2. denies 3 spades and a diamond stopper

Why, oh why, oh why do believer that with no major suit fit everything should be played in notrump. For many this auction will go something like 1 - 1 | 2 - 3NT and on the lead of a heart or even better the Q 3NT goes Down 1. And afterwards the partnership will say, oh well we gave it a try, to bad.

Bidding: So how should this deal be bid? After 1 - 1 | 2 North has to make some kind of forcing bid like 2 as Fourth Suit Forcing (Fourth Suit Forcing ) and give South a chance to show a diamond stopper or if NOT further define his hand. After 4SF South bids 3 a very informative bid ... 3 denies a diamond stopper, denies 3 spades and shows a 5-5 hand in hearts and clubs with minimal values of 12-14 high card points . Knowing South has no more than 3 cards in spades and diamonds, it is not difficult for North to bid 5.

Here again, like Board 10, when a major suit fit is not evident, most pairs will play in 3NT in an auction like 1 - 1 | 2NT - 3NT, which is well and good but will miss 6.

Bidding: After 1 - 1 | 2NT West could bid 3 but if West is afraid East will pass, West could bid 3 and then support clubs. Another option is for West just to bid 4, which many will play as either Gerber or Minorwood for clubs. Any of these auction should allow E/W to reach 6.

West bid of 3 does not prohibit the partnership reaching 3NT if that is the best contract. But 3 leads the partnership to 6.

Play: The only tricky part to the play of this deal is the play on spades. Declarer (East) leads the J and when North does not cover East goes up with the A and plays for dropping the Q. Other wise N/S have the right to win the K.

This auction is not for the fainthearted ...

My friend Paul Thurston from Canada taught me when evaluating hcp, an ace (sure trick) is more valuable than a slew of quacks (which may never win a trick).

Bidding: West opens 1, East responds 1 and West rebids 2. So what is 2 ... 2 is either a 2-level Jump Shift 19+ hcp with 4 losers (but less than a 2 opening) OR if you play Lebensohl over reverses and 2-level Jump Shift, 2 could be a reverse of a good 16+ hcp with 5 losers. East bid of 2NT asks West to quantify and West, bypassing 3, bids 3 showing the 19+ hcp hand (and btw 5 hearts). East now supports hearts with 4 and West with a 3 losers hand goes slamming. Finding East with 1 keycard, either the A or A and heart support bids 6.
