  1. preemptive
  2. 15-17 high card points w/ spade stopper
  3. to play

Mike Lawrence book Judgment at Bridge, while a little old ©1976 (ok, a lot old), instills that you cannot just sit at the table and play bridge as a purely mechanical game, i.e., you must think and use judgment in bidding and play. Which leads us to Board 1 ...

Bidding: Depending on partnership agreements re: defensive tricks vs. preempts, North opens the bidding 3. East should overcall 3NT and many sitting West will sit for 3NT going Down 3.

If North does not preempted 3, East will open 1NT and West will transfer to hearts and then invite to game in notrump 1NT - 2 (transfer) | 2 - 2NT. Soooooo, when North does preempt should West just sit for the 3NT? West should use some judgment on this deal and knowing East has at least 2 hearts one probably being the Ax (or maybe Jxx) should bid 4.

Down 1 — NS +50

Play: In the play of this deal, it is possible that West could go Down 2, by ducking the first club or not finessing against the J, or playing on clubs instead of leading a diamond right away, but in the play here (and in double dummy ) West only goes Down 1. It is also possible South could double 4 holding five hearts J9742, but South's hearts are sitting under West's hearts and they are not really very pretty hearts anyway. In addition, the double of 4 could easily help West play the contract.

If the bridge Gods would grant me one wish, it would be that bridge players would actually pick up a bridge book (or other resource material) and actually study a convention, system, bidding agreement or whatever instead of trying to learn at the table or learn short cuts like "weak freak" without fully understanding the agreement, system, etc. Probably one of the most misunderstood concepts in bridge is the LAW of Total Tricks (Law of Total Tricks ).

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1, East overcalls 1 and South responds 2 ... so what should West do? North by opening has shown 12+ high card points and South by making a 2-level response has shown 10+ points so at minimum N/S have 22 hcp, it is N/S deal. Typically the LoTT applies when the points are relatively divided in the range of 17 vs. 23 hcp. West holds 3 hcp so partner must have about the best hand at the table of 14 hcp to reach 17 hcp combined. Should West bid 4 as a LoTT bid?

West holds 5 really nice hearts QJ1098 and the opponents have not found a fit in a minor suit. Thus, 4 is a gamble not vulnerable, but vulnerable is potentially suicidal. On this deal 4 actually makes and those that bid 4 will consider 4 a great bid and congratulate each other, but not so. Down 1 double would be -200 and Down 2 doubled would be -500, etc. when the opponents cannot even make game and will at be in a part score of N/S + 130 (or even +150) vs. a risky 4x vulnerable. West should Pass or possibly bid 3 and let the opponents find their 4 contract an be happy holding N/S to +130.

Play: East on lead might cash the A first then the A, but when West plays the 9 East should continue the clubs, and thus, holding this to 4 Making 4.

This is not an easy slam to bid, but this is a fun auction.

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and North must decide how to force the bidding. North knows the auction will return to spades, but must decide how to keep the auction alive and best describe his hand. Some might bid Jacoby with only 3-spades but I don't like misrepresenting shape, so I think 2 (or maybe 2) as Two Over One Game Force is the whitest lie. South will rebid 2 or 2NT depending on partnership agreements to show minimal values and 5-3-3-2 shape. So after a game forcing 2 or 2, 3 by North shows extra values, and 4 by South denies extra values.

North with 20 support points and 6 losers is not daunted and bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and when North finds out South has 1 keycard 5 (either A or K) plus the Q and the K 5, 6 is easy to bid.

If South bid 2 to show minimal values and 5-3-3-2 shape, some might consider North bidding 6NT to protect against the lead of a club through North's K98x.

WOW, so many ifs in this deal.

Bidding: Some might open North's hand with a weak-two bid (W2B) 2, but I think this bid will actually help E/W find the right contract and get to game, so lets start with North passing. East with 13 length points, 2 Quick Tricks , 7 losers and an easy rebid opens 1. West with opening values bids 2 and ok, ok, ok North bids 3. I think we would be in the same place in this auction if North had open 2 and East had over called 2. South should raise to 4 EITPTWIF. In either case East will bid spades twice and West will bid hearts twice and East with Ax should concede to 4 or maybe even 5 if pushed.

*EITPTWIF - everybody in the pool, the water is fine

Play: The play of this deal is not difficult, as long as hearts split 2-2 E/W have the right to win the A and the K.
