  1. shows no extra strength
  2. some might rebid spades
  3. cuebid slam try
  4. cuebid

This week starts off with a minor-suit slam, one of my favorite auctions. Often, very often, the minor suit slam brings a top or near top score on a board. Yes, as in the case of Board 1 today, a major suit slam (6 here) or 6NT is makeable, but much harder to bid or takes a leap of faith bid.

Bidding: If there is one thing (ok two things) certain about minor suit slam bidding: 1) someone has to step out in the auction and 2) the auction will look (and often is) painful. Remember, minor suit slams typically happen after exploring for major suits or notrump contracts. In the auction here through 1 - 1 | 2 - 3NT the auction seems pretty standard. Some holding West hand might be temped to rebid spades but 2 is not forcing, 3 is not forcing and 4 is too much of a leap of faith holding a 5-card spade suit. West must make a forcing bid or bid game, some might rebid 3 (F1) instead of 3NT (GF), but I am betting most pairs will bid 3NT so the lead comes into West's scattered high card values.

To reach slam East must now step out and take a call over 3NT. Some might choose 4 as Minorwood (this would have been my call) or in the case suggested here 4 must be a cuebid slam try. West with 16 high card points and 5 losers is excited about slam and might try jumping into something but what about 5 as a cuebid. Some might bid 4 but this might look like a signoff at denying any extra values. After 5 East might now take a leap of faith bid and holding J10 bid 6 or as in the auction here 6.

Play: Bidding slam is the painful part in the play of this deal pretty easy to make 6 or 6 only losing to the A.

  1. Splinter (shortness in clubs, 4+ spades & 11-12 high card points )
  2. lead directional & penalty oriented

For those who play Bergen Raises Major Suit Raises (Bergen), this should be an easy auction.

Bidding: After 3 passes, East opens 1 which should show full opening values or maybe 15 Pearson Points (# of spades + hcp = 15). West can now bid 3 (or 3) to show 4-card support for spades and limit raise values depending on how you count 11 shortage points or 12 support points and 7½ losers . East with extra values of a king better than an opening hand should accept to 4.

Those who do no play Bergen have options of maybe 3 or 3 which will probably keep N/S out of the auction or as in the auction here 4 as a game forcing limit raise Splinter. However, after the 4 bid North could easily (by partnership agreement) double the 4 as lead directional and penalty oriented* and as a result N/S might compete to 5.

* some pairs might play that the double of a Splinter calls for another lead such as the first natural suit (revolving) just below the Splinter

  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. game forcing Stayman

Bidding agreements really come into play on this deal. At the right time there is no more useful bidding agreement than Lebensohl .

Bidding: West with 15 hcp and 4-3-3-3 shape opens 1NT and North overcalls 2 (as spades). East/West play the bidding agreement lebensohl over notrump interference of 2 and higher. And therefore, 3 (direct cuebid of spades) is game forcing Stayman without a spade stopper. Space does not allow teaching lebensohl here, but with a spade stopper East would have first bid 2NT as a relay to 3, then cuebid 3. Without lebensohl, East could have bid 3 as Stayman, but partner would not have known if East held a spade stopper or not.

Play: This deal could have been played out a number of way, for example, North could have continued spades which might allow for the creation of a diamond trick if declarer (West) takes a diamond finesse against the Q.

  1. Fourth Suit Forcing (GF)
  2. spade stopper
  3. extra values

With agreement being played today, like XYZ , there are many ways to bid this auction. Lets try to keep this direct.

Bidding: After the auction of 1 - 1 | 1 West must be careful about partnership agreements to create a forcing auction. Some partnerships might play 2 is xyz and game forcing asking partner to further define his hand. Some partnerships might play 1 is natural (Truscott) but lets stick with 1 is Forth Suit Forcing (Fourth Suit Forcing ) where 2 is natural (Hardy).

After East rebids 1 West is excited about slam until in response to 1 4SF East rebids 1NT. This means East's values are probably in clubs (opening bid suit) and in spades (showing a spade stopper in response to 4SF). And thus, West makes one valiant effort of 3 would show extra values in a game forcing auction and 4 would show weaker values. But this is to no avail East bids 4 settling for game.

Play: You can play this deal out several ways but South has a difficult opening lead. From the auction South knows East has the spades, leading a trump singleton cannot be right and leading from the K2 cannot be right, and thus the J looks like the best opening lead. Given time declarer (East) can set up diamonds.

  3. Texas Transfer ( to )

I look at these deals and say to myself, "self, should I write up one more transfer auction" only to find out later that I should have written up one more transfer auction.

Bidding: South opening the bidding 1NT and West over calls 2 (natural). AND North bids 4 as a Texas Transfer to 4. How hard was that to bid 4 as a transfer to 4? Remember from back on Board 8, we play Lebensohl so 2 would be natural to play, 3 would be natural and game forcing ... so with the options of bidding 2 or 3 naturally, 4 must be a transfer to spades.

North only has one bid and the opponents will take this auction away. Yes, yes, yes North only has 6 quacky points. But if partner cannot make 4, the opponents can make some contract of their own. Just take all the certainty out of this auction and go for it ... 4.

Play: As it turns out partner has no wasted values in diamonds (as you suspected seeing the Q and the opponents overcalling in diamonds) and you find partner with 3 spades Axx.

When we play this deal out you are going to accuse me of writing this up double dummy .

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1 and South makes a 2/1 Game Forcing bid of 2. North rebids 2 and South supports 3. North makes a control bid in clubs and South a control bid in diamonds North bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and South responds 2 keycards. North bids 6 missing either the A or the K. Should be no problems with the auction, everything ok so far.

Play: So on the opening lead East leads the J which declarer (North wins in hand) and crosses to dummy by trumping a spade in order to play the A to bitch the 10.

So now South can see 6 by just giving up the K and there fore takes the safety play of playing the A with the plans of continuing hearts only to see the K drop. Now declarer can see the possibility of making 6 maybe giving up a spade trick only to see the Q drop, making 7.
