Dbl2All pass
  1. 15-18 high card points
  2. Penalty

So we start off this week with a slippery slope.

Bidding: After North passes, East with 12 hcp (and 8 losers ) opens the bidding 1 - many pairs will open 12 hcp hands unless something ridiculous like all quacks . South overcalls 1NT showing 15-18 hcp, a club stopper and a balanced hand. West doubles for penalty. And now the slippery slope, what action should North take?

Alternative 1: if North plans on passing 1NT, E/W should double 1NT for penalty which on the lead of the 3 should go down one for N/S -100 (as shown in the play here) even with declarer's (South) slick play on diamonds.

Alternative 2: if E/W don't sit for the double, E/W should find 2 which makes 2 for N/S -110.

Alternative 3: if North transfers South into diamonds to play in 3, and if down 1 undoubled will be -50 for N/S and if doubled will be -100 for N/S.

Down 1 — NS −100

Play: I understand double dummy says that N/S can make 1NT, but I think this contract calls for the lead of a spade not a club. E/W should be able to take 3 spades, 2 hearts, 1 diamond and 1 club for down one.

Pass1Pass21
Pass22Pass4
All pass
  1. Drury (3+ spades & 10-11 high card points )
  2. not a full opener

Many might consider opening South's hand using the Rule of 20 (Bergen) adding hcp and number of cards in the two long suits to reach 20 or the Suggestion of 22 (Helms) analysis evaluating, the number of quick tricks equal 2 (or more). Most analysis would also consider the placement of the honors. And thus, the other requirement is that the working cards (or values) should be located in the two longest suits (Whidden) i.e., with the KJ8 (4 of the 10 hcp) in spades (the short suit) these values do not contribute like they would if in hearts (one of the long suits). My style would be to open the hand 654 KJ832 void AJ863, but not the South hand here.

Bidding: In the auction presented here, after two passes North with 11 hcp and 8 losers makes a third seat opening of 1. South with 10 hcp makes a Drury bid of 2 artificial and forcing (F1) as 3+ card raise of spades (some might play two-way Drury where 2 shows a 4-card raise). North rebids 2 showing minimum opening values and South with 15 support points in spades, a void in diamonds resulting in a 6-loser hand bids 4.

  1. very trashy W2B
  2. Takeout Double

Bidding: This deal might be bid and played in different methods. In the bidding presented here North opens the bidding 2 (yes, yes, yes I know, very trashy) but with void, I bet a lot will open 2. East makes a discrete pass and West doubles for takeout. After West doubles, East should pass and sit for the double for 1100 as presented here. Some with East hand might cue bid 3 or even bid 3NT directly.

If North does not open 2, then I think East will open 1 and South might over call 2 which West might pass for East to reopen with a double. If neither North or South get into the auction E/W should have no problems finding 3NT.

Bidding: This is (or should be) an easy deal to bid. West opens the bidding 1 and East responds 1 (OMG, please don't tell me your partner passed). West just might jump to 4 (I certainly would in teams), but in pairs I think the right bid is 3 keep partner in the bidding. And now East should bid 4.

This is not an easy slam to bid and East needs to choose bids wisely. The great Alvin Roth said "always plan a second bid before choosing a first".

Bidding: West open's the bidding 1 (better minor) and many holding North overcalls 1 (a little trashy). So what should East bid? The common answer will be holding A532 a Takeout Double to show 4 hearts, over the 1 overcall. Ok, so now if West bids 2, what will East rebid? How about 4, ok you found game, West will pass and you missed slam in 6.

East's rebid with 18 support points should be 2, artificial and game forcing (FG). West will most likely bid 2NT with spades AQJx. Now East can support hearts 3 knowing the partnership is in a game forcing auction and getting to 6 should be relatively easy.
