  1. 12-14 high card points and a balanced hand
  2. invitational balanced hand

This week is Gatlinburg: America’s Favorite Regional - April 17 - 23, 2017

Bidding: What is bridge without a little controversy? After three passes West, with barely 15 Pearson Points (12 hcp + 3 spades) opens 1 and East with 10 hcp responds 1 (bidding 4-card majors up the line). West rebids 1NT, a very very very specific bid in bridge promising 12-14 hcp and a balanced hand (and typically not 4 spades). Partners who continually rebid 1NT with a singleton in my suit ... well, will not be my partner very long.*

Many with East hand will pass 1NT knowing that 14 + 10 ≠ 25, but I like East's hand. East has 109 in combination with the A, the 108xx and the 9 in combination with the QJ, lots of good intermediate values. But West passes 2NT anyway, it was meant to be.

* A shout out to my friend Matt Gellman in Chattanooga, TN.

Play: This deal could be played out a number of way, but surely this auction calls for the lead of a spade. Declarer (West) ducks the first spade and eventually sets up finesse against the K and wins 2 spades + 1 heart +2 diamonds and 3 clubs for 8 tricks.

There are certainly other strategies such as playing club, club, club and setting up 2 additional clubs. If you Made 3 on the play, good for you.

All pass
  1. 5+ diamonds and 11-16 high card points
  2. 3 hearts and 6-9 pts

Board 5 and Board 6 are why we play the game of bridge. On Board 5 N/S have combined 22 hcp (15 + 7), 9-card major suit fit and South has a singleton resulting in combined 14 losers (5 + 9). On Board 6 N/S have combined 24 hcp (17 + 7), no 8-card fit and North has a singleton resulting in 15½ losers (7 + 8½). Many similarities, lets see how these deals play out ...

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and West overcalls 2, which most pairs would have the agreement that a 2-level overcall shows 11-16 hcp, opening or near opening values and not enough values to double and rebid diamonds. North makes a free bid (an unforced bid) North could have easily have passed which should show a fit in hearts (typically 3-card support) and minimum values of 6-9 pts (could be a good 5 to a bad 10 pts). South knowing the partnership has at least a 9-card fit and with shortness in diamonds (just as important it is ulikely partner has wasted values in diamonds) and 18 support points bids 4.

Typically, South might be cautious about a shortness in the long trump suit of the partnership, as the opponents might easily tap South in trump by continually leading diamonds, but with 6 hearts and knowing partner has at least 3 hearts, South is not concerned about being tapped in trump.

Play: So on opening lead West leads the A (ace from ace/king) and follows with the king which South ruffs. The play of this deal is not difficult with East holding the J874 and East the 9 E/Q should win the A, A and a club trick.

  1. 15-17 high card points
  2. Jacoby Transfer ( to )

So on Board 5 and Board 6 there are similar combined strengths on 5 combined 22 hcp and on 6 combined 24 hcp, but there differences, most significantly Board 6 has no 8-card fit in the majors or minors and more combined losers . On Board 5 N/S have combined 14 losers (5 + 9) or 10 winners where on Board 6 N/S have 15½ losers (7 + 8½) or 8½ winners.

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1NT with 15-17 hcp and a balanced hand, and North with only 7 hcp, 5 pretty crappy spades and soft values in quacks (queens and jacks) transfers 2 to 2 and then passes 2.

  1. Weak Two-Bid
  2. Takeout Double
  3. 8-11 high card points
  4. 15+ hcp

Bidding: East opens 2 as a Weak Two-Bid (W2B) showing 5-10 or maybe 11 hcp and 6 hearts. South makes a Takeout Double which, just as a Takeout Double of a 1-level bid, shows opening values and in the case of a major, shows 4-cards in the other major. West jump to 3 depending on partnership agreements shows a min of 8 or 10 hcp but less than game forcing values. East now bids 4 which shows better values for most of 15+ hcp (would have been 17+ hcp if West had not jumped in spades.

Play: East cannot afford to lead hearts away from AQ10 so lead the J. Which South wins with the A and leads the 9 (having seen the 10 drop on the first trick) and finesses the Q. Once in dummy declarer (North) finesses against the K which looses to West. There are many ways this deal could be played out presented here is my version which on the lead of the J makes 5. Should be pretty flat if N/S get to 4 contract.

  1. 20-21 high card points
  2. Jacoby Transfer ( » )
  3. accepting the transfer
  4. Roman Keycard Gerber (Blackwood)
  5. 3 keycards K, A and A

Bidding: While this auction looks simple enough, it requires partnership agreements to advance to slam. North opens the bidding 2NT with 20-21 hcp and a balanced hand. South bids 3 as a transfer to spades and most partnerships holding just two spades will accept the transfer to 3. Typically, bidding beyond the transfer suit, such as 3NT in this auction, shows some kind of superacceptance with a fit in the transferred suit and maximum values, NOT a denial of a fit. After the transfer 3NT would be "to play", 4NT would be Quantitative notrump bids and 5NT would be some form of Grand Slam Force.

So after the transfer, the partnership must have some agreement when looking for aces/kings. Many will play that in an auction if 4NT is Quantitative, then 4 is Gerber or some other form of aces/kings asking bid. In most of my partnerships we play 4 in this auction is RKC Gerber for spades (the transferred suit) with 5-keycards. North responds 5 (1430) for 3 keycards and South bids 6NT.

NOTE: It is true that a club opening lead through South's K might produce 2 losers , but with the values expressed in this auction say this is unlikely.

Bidding: I specifically put this deal in the analysis to talk about opening leads. There is not much to this auction, after three passes North opens 2NT with 21 hcp and 6 losers (pretty standard). South with 6 hcp and no long suit to transfer into bits 3NT. I suspect everyone will get to 3NT on this deal.

Play: So what should be the open lead against 3NT? In David Bird and Taf Anthias's book Winning Notrump Leads, the authors spend considerable technical analysis and logic on leading majors against notrump. While it is quite plausible that North could have opened the bidding 2NT with a 5-card major, it is clear South does not have a 5-card major or would otherwise have transferred in the auction.

In some auctions West can possibly give an indicator of a lead by bidding or doubling, but in 1NT - 3NT or 2NT - 3NT auctions West has no opportunity to make a suggestion below 3NT. The defense of this deal screams for the lead of a major. So which major? Once you have decided to lead a major (eliminating a minor) improves you odds significantly, only hearts or spades. If you hold the KQ65 what are the odds that North opened 2NT without the either the A, K or Q ... I think a spade is the best choice and with possibly 2 heart stoppers and 1 diamond stopper, you may have the opportunity to lead spades multiple times.

I think the opening lead should be the 6. As in the play here with the lead of a minor or a heart, N/S can make 3NT.
