  1. Fourth Suit Forcing (Fourth Suit Forcing )

Bidding: This week starts off with a pretty standard Fourth Suit Forcing (4SF) auction. North with 14 high card points and 7 losers opens the bidding 1 and South with 13 hcp and 7 losers (opening hand values) responds 1, forcing one round (F1). North rebids 1 which shows no extra values, North could have as few as 12 hcp (opening hand) and as much as maybe 15-16 hcp (but not the values or shape to make a forcing rebid).

South makes the key bid in this auction of 2 as Fourth Suit Forcing , artificial saying nothing about diamonds and forcing to game (GF). Most pairs have agreements on responses to 4SF, in this auction 2NT typically denies 3 hearts and shows with QJx a stopper in diamonds. South bids 3NT.

Made 5 — NS +460

Play: In the auction N/S go through 4SF auction to find a stopper in diamonds. East with a shortness in diamonds (and no good lead of his own) figures partner West must have length in diamonds and makes the opening lead of the 6, declarer (North) puts in 10 from South and West ducks the first diamond. In the play of this deal declarer finesses West for the K and then takes a double finesse for split honors of the Q and K.

A different lead might hold this contract to 10 tricks but in the play here N/S take 11 tricks for making 5NT for +460.

  1. balanced invitational

  3. natural ongoing

Bidding: This deal will probably get me into trouble. After three passes, North opens the bidding 1. South having previously passed, bids 2NT. South could have a really bad 12 high card points with hand that could not be opened (maybe rebid problems), but more than likely 2NT limits South to 10-11 hcp and a balanced hand.

North with 15 hcp, 2½ Quick Tricks and 6 losers has some rebid options. One option is to jump to 3, but 3 should show a good suit and North does not even come close to a good suit. Another option is to rebid 2, but this bid would show a min hand, and thus, really undervalue the hand North holds. North with 18 support points and known 8-card fit (South is expected to have 2-card support in spades) surely North wants to be in game could bid 4. I am betting this is the auction most will see 1 - 2NT | 4.

But in the auction here North makes a valiant effort to define his values with a bid of 3. Some will say but ... But ... BUT South may pass 3. If North has minimum values, North could pass 2NT, why would North be trying to play in a minor suit when partner has already said they could safety play in 2NT. I think 3 has to be an ongoing bid. South bids 3 and now North bids 4 showing partner his full hand and values. LOL, to which South passes.

Play: You can pick almost any opening lead you want, declarer (North) wins the opening lead and immediately lead the K. If West (who does not have a count on the deal and sees the QJ107 in dummy) ducks the K then N/S can make 5 on the play, if West rises with the A then E/W should win 2 spades and 1 diamond holding the contract to 4 for +620.

  1. 4-card support

Bidding: West opens the bidding 1 and East responds 1. South overcalls 2 and West responds 2 showing 4-card support in spades, otherwise, West would have made a Support Double with 3-card support in spades. North bids 3 (pesky opponents) and East bids 4.

East knows that the partnership has a 10 card fit in spades and reevaluating his hand has shortness in diamonds and clubs. Some might bid 4 on the 10-card fit alone. BUT if partner has opening values, South with what should be opening or near-opening values to overcall 2 in an open auction (1 - 1 where neither hand has limited values) are sitting under partner's values. This 4 is not just a LAW of Total Tricks bid but one based on the placement of values.

Made 4 — NS −620

Play: The play of this contract is not difficult or mysterious. Declarer (East) is going to play South for the missing values. If the diamonds are not lead by the opponents, East will lead the Q and if South ducks then East has no club loser. If South rises with the A of clubs, East will transfer to dummy and put a diamond on the K limiting the deal to 1 diamond loser. So N/S win 1 spade, 1 diamond and 1 club, E/W making 4 for +620.

Bidding: With 15 high card points and 5-4-2-2 shape (honors in both doubletons) some will open West hand 1NT (I probably would) which should not inhibit reaching slam and may in fact make it easier to reach 6NT.

In the auction presented here West opens 1. While some partnerships might have different agreements (e.g., some partnerships might have a different agreement for a reverse after 2/1 GF bid) that will produce a different auction the auction here should be reasonable through 3NT. After West bids 3NT, most would play that 4 would be some from of ace/keycard asking like Gerber or Minorwood . I would bid 4 as Minorwood which will help quantify controls to reach 6, maybe 6NT. But if East chooses to bid 5, West holding Qx should bid 6. In any event in whatever auction E/W should reach 6 if not 6NT.

Play: No matter what the opening lead (the play of the hand will vary based on the opening lead), generally as long as the the K or J is on side it is not a difficult slam to make.

  1. some might open 1
  2. Negative Double

Board 21 & Board 22 present back to back 6 opportunities.

Bidding: After North passes, some holding East's hand with 11 high card points , 2½ Quick Tricks and an easy rebid might open 1, but with 8 losers East passes in this auction. South passes, West opens 1 and North overcalls 1. East makes a Negative Double specifically for hearts (other major) and West bids 2 which shows no extra values but better values than rebidding 2. East holding AQx bids 3NT to right side the contract against a spade lead and all pass.

So back up the auction, if East opens 1 (I would be very tempted), West will bid 2 as a forcing minor suit raise (Inverted Minor Suit Raises or Criss Cross Raises), East will rebid 2NT showing stoppers in both majors and now E/W might get to 6. Knowing a diamond fit West's hand with a singleton spade revaluates to 16 support points and East might bid 4 as a Splinter bid in spades or bid 4 as Minorwood finding partner has 2 keycards and E/W might reach 6.

Play: Playing the 3NT contract, on the lead of the J, East wins the first spade trick with the A and plays on diamonds which North wins and returns a spade which East wins with the Q. East has no alternatives other than to cash out tricks making 4NT for +430.

  1. 1NT Forcing
  2. 19-21 high card points Game Forcing
  3. stronger than 5
  4. RKC Blackwood (for diamonds)
  5. 1 keycard

Where Board 21 was hard to bid 6, Board 22 is pretty easy.

Bidding: East opens the bidding 1 and West responds 1NT Forcing (1NTF). East with 19 hcp and a second suit jump shifts in 3, forcing to game. Some might play that a Jump Shift in 3 is a convenient Jump Shift not necessarily promising clubs, but 3 should be a suit with length (and hopefully values). West bid of 4 promises a suit with length and is stronger than 5, in a game forcing auction and no interest in slam West would just bid 5. Now that East knows there is fit in diamonds East hand reevaluates to 23 support points . East could bid 4 as Redwood or as in the auction here 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood for diamonds. East knowing West has either the K or the A is happy to bid 6.

Play: The play of 6 is not difficult. On the lie of the cards declarer (East) can make seven on the lead of a spade. Or as shown here, six on South cashing the A.
