  1. 1NT Forcing
  2. best response
  3. 3 is to play

Bidding:
This is a perfect 1NT Forcing (1NT Forcing ) deal. As in the auction here, after 1 - 1NTF is used as forcing 1-round (F1) asking partner to further define his hand. East makes the best response of 2 and West with 8 high card points and a great 6-card club suit of KQJ1065 bids 3 as natural and "to play".

For those who do not play 1NTF* ... well West with just 8 hcp and 10 length points will have to fudge to bid 2 which is an ok bid itself, but is forcing, East will probably rebid 2NT and I have no idea what contract this auction will reach, maybe 3 maybe 3NT.

* 1NTF can be used playing Standard American

Play:
With the opening lead of the 2 declarer (West) must duck to the West hand in order to lead up to the KQ10xx while still having an entry in dummy with the A. North should duck the first spade trick, but either way declarer has early the spade lead puts himself in a great position to play out this deal. Declarer cashes the A and trumps a spade back to his hand. Now the Q103 in dummy freezes the A as the Q becomes a threat card.

The rest of the play of this hand is shown in the trick-by-trick. While the double dummy says that 3 does not make, my set up does in face make 3.

  1. Negative Double
  2. 12-14 high card points & stopper

Bidding:
This is really a ugly deal and can be bid any number of ways, for example, if East makes a second Takeout Double West might get in the auction with clubs. As in the auction here however, North opens 1, East overcalls 1 and South makes a Negative Double specifically for hearts.

In most auctions there is a "key bid" that sets the tone of the auction and without which the auction will most certainly take a different course. In this deal the key bid is North's rebid of 1NT holding 12 hcp and the J1065 and K. South with good values of 10 hcp and the K bids 2NT as invitational and realistically the auction should end with 2NT. North does not have the max for his bid 14 hcp, let alone any unstated values.

Play:
The opening lead is not an easy decision, East surely will not lead a spade away from his AQ thinking the KJ10 might be in declarer's hand, an aggressive lead might be a club but East has no indication a club will be a good lead, who knows what the right lead might be maybe a heart through dummy?

The play of this deal is not difficult, without the opening lead of a diamond, declarer (North) will still have to take the finesse against the Q and all the finesses find missing honors A, A and K in the right spot, for lucky for 3NT..

Bidding:
I love these crazy deals. After two passes, West with 17 hcp and a balance d hand opens 1NT. If North with 11 hcp and no good suit to bid passes, as in the auction here, East will typically transfer West to hearts (2 ยป 2) and subsequently Pass. If North passes the first time, it is unrealistic to see North in pre-balancing seat getting into the auction and after East passes 2 it is hard to see South balancing in with 2.

All that being said, if North takes any action over 1NT, it will not be a good result for N/S as East will pass and West should not try to balance in the auction.

Play:
The play of this deal will not be fun. Dealer (West) with side-suit winners will try to play on trumps ASAP but with both North and South having singletons it will not be easy. I don't think there is a line of play to make 2 unless the opponents lead hearts or let declarer consecutively lead hearts.

Bidding:
Board 3 references the "key bid" concept where there is often a key bid in an auction that sets the tone of the auction. If after 1 - 1 | 3 West bids 3NT, the 3NT bid says I have nothing else to say and the auction will most likely end at 3NT making 6 for an E/W plus score of 490 (still a good score).

But if West instead recognizes that in support of clubs West's hand reevaluates to 12 support points and makes a courtesy bid of 3; there is now the possibility of reaching slam of 6 or 6NT. As in the auction here, West bids 3 and East's bid of 3NT shows double stoppers in suits which encourages West. West's bid of 5 has to be slam invitational (i.e., not an attempt to play in 5 as game), otherwise, West would not have bid 3 and would not have taken 3NT out. East is happy to bid 6 which some West might convert to 6NT, but either 6 or 6NT will produce a top score on this deal.

Play:
Making slam is not difficult as long as hearts behave. Declarer (East) wins the opening spade, pulls two rounds of trump leaving the 10 in dummy for a future entry if required. Then plays 2-rounds of diamonds A and K to see if an honor drops and then leads the J up to dummy's K1054 and West covers with the Q to K to A, setting the 10 up as winner covering the 6 in hand. Everything else falls into place for either 6 or 6NT taking the same tricks in either contract.

Bidding:
It is really hard to have a constructive bidding process especially reaching game after one of the opponents opens with a strong 1NT. North opens the bidding 1NT and South makes a Jacoby Transfer of 2 transfer to 2. As in the auction here, West with 13 hcp double of 2 is both lead directional and penalty oriented, showing good values a good suit with honors and length (i.e., not just an honor combination). East, with 12 support points and hearts support, bids 3 and West bids 4.

Play:
South could make any number of leads. North not competing in spades should not be an indication NOT to lead a spade. My computer analysis chose to lead a club and the and the play is as follows. With North only winning the Q and the A.
