  1. Control Showing Bid
4♠ by North
Made 5 — NS +450

Hold the South cards. When partner opens 1♠, would you force to game? While there are many 12 HCP hands with which I would make a limit raise, this is not one of them! The reasons are the ruffing value, great quality trump, and holding the intermediates in my long suits. I think you should force to game with this hand so I would choose to make a 2/1 in diamonds. I need a 4th trump to bid 2NT as my game forcing raise in spades. Holding only three trump, make a 2/1 in your longest suit, and then raise opener's major at your second bid. The 3♠ bid shows a Game Force with three-card spade support.
As North, I would be willing to show my club controls by bidding 4♣. I would not be the one who goes beyond game but I think the hand is worth more than just a raise to 4♠. South can also cooperate but isn't strong enough to bid beyond game. The one who knows goes so since neither partner can visualize 12 tricks, the partnership stops in game.
The auction certainly suggests leading a heart and I think East will lead a high one. At matchpoint scoring, declarers need to play for the the 11 trick by either ruffing 2 clubs in dummy or by ruffing 1 club in dummy and taking the ruffing finesse in hearts against West.
Declarer has at leas some suggestion the West has the Q, because of the opening lead of the A. With AKQ, East probably would have led a different honor to get count or to let partner know he holds all three honors.

Made 5 — EW +450

Hold the East cards. What would you bid after North opens 1? There are three logical choices and any of them could be right. The three choices are pass, 1, and 1NT. Making a takeout double is not a logical choice since you have no support for spades. Overcalling 1 is a close second choice for me, but my fourth diamond and my 10 spot suggest notrump to me. I like to "bid where I live" and I think 1NT is the most reasonable approximation of my hand. I would love to have a second spade because then the bid would be a no-brainer but I feel that bidding is better than passing because I have 16 HCP and want to enter the auction. Overcalling 1 could also be right but I don't want to take ruffs in my hand and be shortened quickly, especially if in a 4-3 fit. I don't mind 4-3 fits, but I prefer to be able to take the rufs in the three-card hand and not the four-card hand. If you don't like a 1NT overcall, don't bid it!
As West I would always invite game with this 8 HCP hand. East has an easy decision to accept the game invitation and breathes a sigh of release when partner raises hearts instead of transferring to spades.
Declarer should have no problem ruffing two spades in hand and then drawing trump. Dummy's doubleton diamond and East having four hearts means that many Norths will abandon diamonds and switch to spades at trick 2. This helps declarer on this hand but on some others it would be the best defense. It fails ONLY when partner has a singleton diamond and declarer has four hearts and five diamonds for the bidding.

Kevin Wilson Hand Analysis

3NT by East
Made 6 — EW +690

This is a nice simple auction that many will have. Hold the West cards. Would you use Stayman or just bid 3NT immediately over 1NT? The decision is close. The more likely my partner is to have a five-card heart suit and still open 1NT, the more likely it is that I need to bid Stayman. Bidding 3NT immediately is a matchpoint style bid. West is hoping that neither hand has a ruffing value and that notrump and hearts will take the same number of tricks. I like to employ the tactic when I am at the top of my range for a raise to 3NT because experience has taught me that is the most likely time the tricks will be the same. When just barely scraping up a 3NT bid, I will always employ Stayman. If the A were the ♣A, bidding 3NT would be an 80% bid to work out.
There are other advantages to the tactic that aren't immediately obvious and I think it is worth exploring it a little more. When you bid Stayman followed by 3NT, the opening leader knows not to lead with major because dummy has one four-card major suit and declarer the other. The opening lead will almost always be a minor suit. In a 1NT - 3NT auction, they will frequently lead a major suit. This can be advantageous when they lead right into your or partner's best suit.

4 by South
Made 4 — NS +620

Hold the South cards. Would you open this hand in first position (the dealer), all vulnerable? Bridge is a bidder's game and the hand meets the Rule of 20 so you may open if you want. this is a hand that meets the Rule of 20 that I may not open! The ♣QJ isn't carrying much value and many of my HCP are in queens and jacks. There are no aces and little defense if partner ends up doubling a contract.
There has been an update to the Rule of 20 that is worth mentioning. Some use the Rule of 22 (20+2 quick tricks). This update helps less experienced decide when to use the Rule of 20 and when to avoid opening a bad hand. The Rule of 20 + 2 suggests opening hands that meet the Rule of 20 ONLY when they also have 2 quick tricks in them. The South hand has only one quick trick (the KQ) and therefore you should pass with it.
Whether you open or not, I think you will still reach 4. Many declarers will go down on this hand but you shouldn't! You need to use your entries conservatively. You need to lead towards the KQ twice and you may also need to finesse in hearts if trump break poorly. Don't make the mistake of winning the ♠A and then cashing the AK. You won't be able to avoid the loss of two diamond tricks.
