  1. Negative Double
  2. does NOT show 6-spades

In memory of Marvin Shatz, Hilton Head Island, SC.

We start off this week with a dorky deal ... awkward in many ways. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North with 17 high card points and a balanced hand opens 1, some might open this deal 1NT, but as my long time partner and friend Marvin Shatz would say, "I'm never opening 1NT with 5 good spades, I might with 5 hearts but not 5 good spades because I do not have a rebid problem." East overcalls 2 and South makes a Negative Double. This deal is awkward first in that South with 6 hcp and A makes a double to show 4-hearts, but does not really have the values or suit length to take another call and second, North with no other bid after the Negative Double, just rebids his suit 2. Most pairs have a planned rebid of either 2M or 2NT to show a minimal hand and in such cases 2M just shows a minimal rebid not 6-cards in the suit.

Some might consider with 17 hcp jumping to 3, but North must consider the placement of values. With East overcalling 2 North's Q10 is worthless so all North really has is 15 hcp.

Play: The play of this deal is not hard, North trumps the third diamond with the 7, pulls 4 rounds of trump, cashes the A and leads up to the Q. East can win the K and cash out diamonds, but will eventually need to exit with a heart or club. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

  1. 2/1 game force
  2. longer clubs than diamonds
  3. Roman Keycard Minorwood
  4. 2 keycards & Q

I can't say this often enough that bidding minor suit slams requires some patience and timing, because auctions first look for major suit fits and notrump and agreements are a little funky. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: This auction starts off pretty normal, South deals and opens 1, North responds 2 as game forcing 2/1. It is hard to see East jumping into a 2/1 auction with spades, but it might happen. In the auction here South rebids 2 and North rebids 3 a key bid in this auction. The 3 bid first denies heart support, second denies a spade stopper, and third must show that clubs are longer than diamonds in an unbalanced hand (might be 5-4-2-2). South with a good hand in support of clubs, bids 4 to shows support and is RKC Minorwood for clubs, otherwise with no interest in slam South would just have bid 5. North's response of 4NT (fourth step) shows 2 keycards and the Q. Now pretty easy to bid 6.

Most natural bidding is a process of bidding fits, shapes and values. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East deals and opens the bidding 1, some with South's hand might overcall 1 (questionable with just 7 high card points ) but in the auction here South passes. West responds 1 and East rebids 2, everything fine. West's bid of 2 is Forth Suit Forcing (4SF) and East bid of 2 shows 3 spades so with three suits bid East is 5-4-3-1 with 5 diamonds, 4 clubs, 3 spades and shortness in hearts. West bid of 3 shows a fit in diamonds and the auction could go a number of ways from this point ... each side could bid out honors/controls or as in the auction here good ole 4 as RKC Minorwood where West shows 2 keycards without the Q.

Bidding:
After 2 passes, North opens 3 and some might play two-suited take outs like 4 or 4NT, but with 18 high card points East first makes a Takeout Double and South raises the preempt to 4. East has no alternative but to bid 5. Regardless of the bidding most pairs should get to 5.

  1. preemptive
  2. Takeout Double
  3. extending the preempt

I started out this week talking about dorky deals and nothing says dorky like preemptive bidding. My feeling about preemptive bidding is that the opponents just can't let preemptive bids push or bully them around. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: East deals and open the bidding 3. South has a dorky hand with only 9 high card points but a void in hearts. If South passes, West could easily extend the preempt, biding 4. North will then be put under the gun to balance at the 4-level with a take out double. South as the ABBA song says "if you got no place to go ... take a chance on me" and should make a Takeout Double on shape if nothing else. After the double West still might extend the preempt to 4 but North can now bid 4. It would be unusual for either side to bid beyond 4.

Play: The play of this deal actually makes 6, but it is impossible to bid 6, it just so happens trumps split, the K is on side, etc.
