OPENING LEAD: 2

The issue here is how to bid the North hand. There are three ways., Open 1 and rebid 1NT, open 1 and rebid 2, or open 1 and rebid 2 . With minor suit hands like this my preference is to open clubs, my best suit, and rebid 1NT if I have 12-14 balanced. If I had 5 diamonds and 4 clubs, similar to this hand, I would prefer to open 1 and rebid 2. I don’t like opening 1 and rebidding 2 on only a five card suit. The other choice of opening 1 and rebidding 2 has a vocal minority in support and has some advantages but partner expects you to have five diamonds. With the normal spade lead you will make 4 for 180 and a good score.

Nicolas Lecuyer Hand Analysis

This analysis, in French, is for our French speaking Canadian readers as part of a D1 Charity Event. For the intrepid: (http://translate.google.com ...beware the suit and card symbols!)

Unlike the previous hand, with a five card major I prefer to open that rather than my six card minor as it locates our potential major suit fit straight away. The defense will often stay in the dark regarding the undisclosed long side suit. 3 is a good choice by West. It is always good to pre-empt. There are some who would open the East hand and I would then overcall 1 . The play in 3 should involve finessing the spades twice (the 3 bidder is very unlikely to have the K,Q) and ruffing a spade in dummy in case they are 4-2.

I prefer to get in early and therefore I would double even with the very mediocre spades. If you do pass it will go 1 then a 1NT rebid and now you have to come in with a double showing the other two suits. I prefer the bid now approach as in many ways it is safer. In the example auction, West’s double is a Support Double(s) showing three card support. That is a good convention which I recommend. If E-W over compete to 3 South should double as a one trick set would be 200, which beats all part-scores.

Allan Graves Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
PassPass2All pass

Most top players no longer have a taboo about opening a weak two bid with a side four card major. You can play a simple type of Ogust over the weak two opening. In response to 2NT asking you bid 3 - a good hand, 3 - a medium hand, 3M - a poor hand and 3 of the other major as four cards with extra values. On this hand 2 steals the pot as South does not quite have a 2NT overcall. Indeed 2NT will fair very badly. 2 makes easily and will make 3 unless North South lead trumps initially.

If East had opened 1, now South might well come in with 1NT and North can compete to 3. Pre-empts are good.

Nicolas Lecuyer Hand Analysis

This analysis, in French, is for our French speaking Canadian readers as part of a D1 Charity Event. For the intrepid: (http://translate.google.com ...beware the suit and card symbols!)

Nicolas Lecuyer Hand Analysis

Retour trèfle pour l'as.

This analysis, in French, is for our French speaking Canadian readers as part of a D1 Charity Event. For the intrepid: (http://translate.google.com ...beware the suit and card symbols!)

Une main banale dans les enchères. 1SA passe passe passe.

The first round of bidding is routine but North comes in with 3 on their second turn. With such strong suits this is not as dangerous as it may appear . Even if you get doubled and go down 500 they would have had a game. The 3 strikes gold as South can bid 5, down one against 4, which makes. Indeed on this auction E-W have to judge well to take their plus score. East’s 3 bid is one of those "unassuming Q bids" inviting game in hearts. The key here is that North had a very good diamond suit which protects against a large penalty . There are many ways that 3 can win. This case was one of them.
