This week opens with a deal that makes 10 tricks in hearts, but even with good partnership bidding agreements will be hard to reach 4! Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1 and South responds 1. West overcalls 2 and North makes a Support Double showing exactly 3 hearts. South with 10 support points , 10 length points, 10 shortage points or 8 losers , no matter how you measure it an invitational hand, makes a rebid of 3. With only 12 high card points , 13 support points and 8 losers North accepting an invitation to 4 is marginal at best, maybe in teams but hard to see in matchpoints.

Play: In the play here, after winning the AK, West shifts to a spade which helps in the play of this deal, but it makes no difference. If West does not shift to a spade (say shifts safely to a heart), declarer (South) can lead up to clubs twice dropping the Q and if necessary ruff out clubs. Maybe the theme for this week is awkward deals or based on Board 1 as well maybe better awkward auctions. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and North makes a 2/1 game forcing bid of 2. South now bids out his values and shape (no reason to stand in his chair to make a bid) ... LOL I often have my junior bridge players stand in their chair to make a bid. Some would have South rebid 2 right away, being in a 2/1 auction the Reverse to 2 not showing extra values, but while not showing extra values the reverse should show solid values, so South rebids 2. North rebids diamonds, 3 and now South showing shape and limited values bids 3. Some might have North bid 5 or maybe 3NT but in the auction here North knows the partnership has a 7-card Moysian (4-3) fit in spades and game forcing values and chooses 4.

The rationale for 4 is that if the partnership can make 4, it will take making 6 to have an equal score and partner might not have but 1 club stopper and 3NT just might not make.

Play: Some might argue with opening lead of the K, thinking declarer (South) might need to take a finesse for the K, but I don't think it will make a difference. On the first opportunity declarer will lead up to the AQ and drop the K in any event. North can set up diamond and run them through East. East is entitled to win 2 spades and the A. 1. Takeout Double

Here is another deal that meets our awkward auctions theme. double dummy East/West can make 4, but how will they ever get there? Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and West can do nothing but Pass. North by passed hand (BPH) responds 1NT (some might pass). East BPH now makes a Takeout Double and West with 14 support points for spades bids 3 and East with 15 support points for spades bids 4. Maybe it was not so hard after all.

Play: Declarer (West) ruffs the opening diamond lead and cashes AK pitching a heart. Then plays one round of spades seeing the J drops, plays a second round dropping the KQ. The rest of the play of this hand can take a number of alternatives, but declarer ruff 2 remaining clubs or hearts and set up K. 1. asking about control in spades

I'm not certain this fits into this week's awkward auctions theme, but everybody loves a good slam. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1, East overcalls 2 (as weak) and South cuebids 3 as a forcing raise in hearts. North's bid of 4 is natural showing a strong hand as a slam try (at the 4-level it can't be a game try), otherwise, North would just have bid 4. South could take many actions over 4, such as a 4 cuebid or 4NT as RKC Blackwood , but in the auction here 5 specifically asks about spades (the suit the opponent's bid) asking if partner has 2nd round control (the Kx) or better in spades to bid 6.

Play: Not really much to the play of this deal, declarer (North) must play West for the Q and play East for the missing K. One of these finesses must work for 6 to make. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

Another deal for this week's awkward auctions theme, can North/South reach 4. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1 and South responds 1. North is not excited about it but rebids 2 (unless you have a partnership agreement to raise on 3-card support. South now rebids 2 showing 5-spades and less than Fourth Suit Forcing values. North with 3-spades and 16 support points in spades can now bid 3 and South accepts 4 with 9 support points in spades. An important factor in South accepting 4 is South has no wasted values and a good KQ10xx spade suit.

Alternative Bidding:
Many with West hand will over call 1 with 2, this should not be an issue for N/S. If West overcalls 2 North can make an immediate Support Double or cuebid 3 as support for spades.
