  1. invitational w/ good rebiddable suit

We start off with an almost impossible contract to make without some psychic powers. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: The bidding on this deal is not hard North opens 1 - South responds 1 and West overcalls 1. Many with North's hand might rebid 1NT, in which case South might try for 3NT but this deal just might be played in 3. But in the auction here we are going to make North pass to limit his values. North's pass allows South to make a jump rebid of 3 showing a good rebiddable diamond suit and North with K43 will probably bid 3NT.

Made 4 — NS +430

Play: In the play presented here there is legitimacy in splitting diamond honors AK (i.e., playing the A on first diamond trick dropping the Q) and there is some legitimacy in leading up to the A such that a lead can be made from declarer's hand (North) in order to take the diamond finesse knowing the Q has dropped offside. By finding these two drops, it is easy to see declarer must finesse West for the J, making 4 for +430.

BUT this is a great deal of legitimacy explanations here with so many things to go wrong like taking the club finesse against the K or pitching away a club instead of baring spades pitching the 9. This explanation looks good here in writing, but at-the-table, this line of play will be hard to find! Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

  1. Inverted Minor Suit Raise

  3. shows heart stopper & denies diamond stopper

This deal is included in this week's commentary, somewhat for the bidding, but also the play of this deal. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: With 13 high card points and 17 length points North opens 1 (please don't tell me your partner preempted this hand) and South responds 2 as an Inverted Minor Suit Raise. Some might respond 2NT and that is OK, the partnership should still get to 5.

In response to 2 after West's pesky 2 overcall North responds 2, showing a spade stopper and denying a heart stopper, South bids 3 showing a heart stopper and denying a diamond stopper. North bids 5, a pretty straight forward conventional auction in response to Inverted Minors .

Play: The key play on this deal is comes on trick 4 (T4) when declarer (North) leads the 10 from dummy. Without the J North cannot finesse the Q! If West does not cover the 10 with either the K or J then North rises with the A and leads the 2 up to dummy's remaining holding of Q10. East cannot afford to let this trick go and must rise with the K.

  1. Jacoby 2NT
  2. extra values
  3. RKC Blackwood
  4. 2 keycard & the Q

This deal takes a partnership understanding of Splinter s vs. Jacoby 2NT. I follow Max Hardy's guideline (Std Bidding 2/1, pg 155) that a Splinter is a game forcing limit raise based on high card points values. And therefore, with 13+ hcp, as in this deal, South must make a conventional Jacoby 2NT raise in spades. (I will not even address the horrible practice of splintering with a singleton ace in this commentary.) Once the partnership has an understanding of Jacoby 2NT this slam is easy to bid. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1 and South responds 2NT as a conventional Jacoby 2NT raise in spades showing 4+ spades and full opening values of 13+ hcp. North with 17 hcp and 19 support points responds 3 which shows extra values (an ace better than an opening hand). South with North's response and 16 support points should not have a hard time to go slamming with 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood. North's response of 5 shows 2 keycards and the Q; South bids 6.

  1. Takeout Double
  2. cuebid is game forcing

OMG what a horrible deal ... but from lemons you should be able to make lemonade. If West were opening the bidding it would be easy to open 2 to create a forcing auction. But West is not the opening bidder. The first lesson from this deal is how to create a forcing auction when you can't open 2. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: So the interloper South opens the bidding 1, West with 24 high card points first makes a Takeout Double which his partner rightfully interprets as a standard Takeout Double and bids 1 (the best descriptive bid of his hand). On his second opportunity to describe his hand West makes a cuebid of 2 (opponents opening bid), marking the auction as strong and forcing. Poor, poor East again with no better descriptive bid, bids 2. West could now bid 2NT to show the balanced 22+ hcp or as in the auction here bids 2 his long suit, I would not fault either auction. In the auction here if West bids 2, East will bid 4.

Play: In the play presented here even if North does not lead a diamond, West can ruff clubs to reach dummy. Have fun with the play ... Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com
