  1. very close to game forcing GF

We start off this week with what initially looks like it should be a nice easy auction, but nothing is really easy in bridge. Some with East's hand might consider opening 1 with 11 high card points and 7 losers . To its credit East's hand does have 2½ Quick Tricks , but typically in first or second seat with a hand that has 2 aces and 1 king it is desirable for the K to be in the same suit as one of the aces, AK A not each honor in a separate suit. Thus, we are making East initially pass in the auction here. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: In fourth seat, I would open 2 (not Weak Two-Bid ) to show a rebiddable heart suit and full opening values, but in the auction here West just opens 1 and East responds 1. On rebidwith a 7-card suit West is very close to jumping to 3; I would not fault the jump to 3, but to keep this auction going West just rebids 2. East's rebid of 3 in might go by a lot of names a "high reverse" a "responder's reverse" maybe others but the bid at the 3-level forcing partner to correct to the 3-level at 3 or 3 shows extra values and by must be very close to game forcing. West just rebids 3 and now East can bid 4.

Play: The play of this deal is very easy. With the lead of the 8 the play here rises with the A and cashes the A transfers to the A and pitches the losing spade on the K. The rest falls into place splitting diamond honors for one diamond loser to the K and North has the right to win 2 heart tricks. 1. Fourth Suit Forcing (GF)
  2. RKC Blackwood (for hearts)
  3. 2 keycards K and A

When North opens the bidding 1, South with 20 high card points and 3 losers is pretty certain this deal is going to slam. This deal should be easy to get to 6, the question is 7 biddable. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1, South responds 1 North rebid 2 (natural) and South rebids 2(artificial) as Forth Suit Forcing (4SF to game). Knowing the partnership is in a game forcing auction North rebids 2, no reason to be jumping around and South rebids 3 (natural). With no other descriptive bid North rebids 3 (which is probably not a 7-card suit or North's first rebid might have been hearts not clubs. South bids 4NT as Roman Keycard Blackwood and North responds with 2 keycards (K & A), but not the Q, the queen of trumps.

South with a singleton club, know this is now a 34 point deck and should be able to count up enough points and tricks to bid 7.

Play: Not really much to the play of this deal 2 losing clubs get covered by the AK and all declarer (North needs to do is ruff 1 club in hand and as long as the hearts do not split 5-0 everything is good.

  1. Takeout Double

This deal just goes to show there is nothing standard in bridge bidding. South opens the bidding 1 ... now what? If West could see all hands he should realize if he passes East/West will be competing in spades, but South will rebid clubs and North/South should get to 5. Sooooo without seeing all hands, should West be competing? Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: After South opens 1, West should not pass. West has only two options either to over call 1 with AK102 or make a minimum off shape Takeout Double (Savannah Double) where the double shows opening values but ignores shape. Most partnerships have an agreement that the responder to the TO double will show a preference for a 4-card major rather than a 5-card minor. In the auction here West chooses to make a Takeout Double with the belief that if partner bids clubs West can bid a major and hope to escape in some reasonable auction.

As it turns out, despite West's daring TO double after South rebids clubs, North still drives the game to 5.

  1. artificial
  2. RKC Blackwood
  3. 2 keycards and a void

Unlike Board 5, this is not a biddable grand slam, but most pairs should get to 6. North has 19 support points for spades and South has 20 support points for spades, surely someone would go slamming. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1, South responds 1 and North raises 2 (by partnership agreement this shows 4-spades). 3 is a little uncertain it is some kind of artificial bid, maybe Help Suit Game Try or Fourth Suit Forcing. Bidding 4 should show something extra, help for clubs maybe. 4NT is Roman Keycard Blackwood for spades and 5NT should show 2 keycards and a void.

Play: Some might not lead the A on opening lead but with South's 3, bid as some kind of artificial bid, the A looks right. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com
