  1. typically forcing F1

We start off this week with another one of those depending on partnership agreements (DoPA) deals. A reasonable partnership agreement for preempts is to play disciplined vulnerable (especially unfavorable) and undisciplined not vulnerable (especially favorable). Using this as an opening guideline, below we address forcing responses. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North with equal vulnerability (white vs. white), 8 high card points and solid intermediates of J1098754 opens the bidding 3. Some playing East might consider to overcall 3NT, but holding AKQ62 we are going to make East pass to see if partner will back in with a protective double.

South responds to 3 with 3. In modern standard bridge 3 would show a very good hand 15+ hcp and a 6+ card spade suit exploring game and slam prospects. Most partnerships will play a new suit by responder is very very very close to 100% forcing. About the only exception might be a misfit with opener and busted values (i.e., an undisciplined preempt). If your partnership plays 3 is not forcing, then South with 4-losers should bid 4. In in the auction here North in response to 3 and no space to do much more bids 3NT and South corrects to 4.

Play: There is not much to the play of this deal East/West are entitled to win the A, the A and the Q. If for some reason they do not collect these winners declarer (South) can put the losing 3 on the K. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

  1. Two Over One Game Force

  3. control bid

Here is a deal where playing 2/1 Game Force system has advantages. South opens 1 and North makes a game forcing 2/1 bid of 2 and the partnership can just bid out their hands. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens 1 and North bids 2 game forcing. Depending on partnership agreements (DoPA) some with South's hand would rebid 2 to show a minimal hand, but we will make South bid 3 here. 3 bypassing 2 would normally be a High Reverse showing solid values of 14+ high card points , but not after a 2/1 bid. North bids 3 which could be natural, but in this auction is Fourth Suit Forcing (4SF) and South bids 4 showing exactly three hearts and no extra values. North with 19 support points opposite an opening hand bids 5 as a control bid and South with 3 quick tricks in the K, AK but no control bid below 5 just bids 6.

Play: The play of this deal gets a little tricky. Some will accuse me of seeing the singleton K, but this is not the case. Missing the KJ the correct way to play the heart suit is to play the A and lead up to the Q. In this play the K drops and now declarer plays to ruff diamonds in dummy. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

I am surprised how often partnerships do not have an agreement (or understanding) of how to bid notrump ranges in 1st seat let alone 2nd seat. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: North opens 1 and if East had overcalled 1NT it would typically show 15-18 hcp. So East first doubles and after partner bids 1 (forced bid) if East bids notrump (at the lowest level) it would show 19-20 hcp. So East now cuebids 2 forcing partner one more time to find a bid, in the auction here 2. This double and cuebid combination should make the auction game forcing. Now in a game forcing auction, East does not need to do anything silly like stand on the table and jump up and down, just bids 2NT which shows 21-23 hcp. West bids 3NT.

  1. Two Over One Game Force
  2. Splinter
  3. control bid of the K

Everybody knows I love minor suit slams, and like many recently it is a Splinter bid that allows slam on this deal. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens the bidding 1 and North makes a 2/1 Game Force bid of 2 which promises 5-clubs and opening values. If South bids two diamonds it is just bidding shape. If South bids 3 it would be a Jump Shift showing extra values. But South's bid of 4 is a self Splinter showing 5-hearts, singleton or void in diamonds, 4-clubs (at least) and thus, 3 or 4 (but not 5) spades.

While North is aceless, North has good values with 16 support points and 6 losers , so 4 (below game of 5) is a control bid showing either the A or K (and denying the A). South with all missing aces bids 6.

Play: There is nothing to the play of this deal after East cashes the A setting up the KQJ in decclarer's (North) hand. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com
