There are times that vulnerability does not matter ... WHⱯT⁈ Vulnerability matters all the time. In bridge vulnerability white vs. red can be your best friend or vulnerability red vs. white your worst enemy. Or as in this deal with equal vulnerability white vs. white the flexibility to take some chances. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: Some disciplined players might not open this deal 1 in third seat with 11 high card points points and not having support for both majors. But with 7 losers and a good 5-card diamond suit AK109x, 1 looks right. West overcalls 1 (would open 1 if South passes) and after North makes a Negative Double, East makes a LAW of Total Tricks (LoTT) bid of 4. South with 4-spades bids 4. West with equal vulnerability, a singleton diamond and knowing partner only has a doubleton at most in spades competes to 5. North with strong cards in both diamonds and clubs makes a penalty double (with a void in hearts some might compete to 5).

Play: There is not much to the play of this deal. North/South have the right to win the A and the A. What declarer (West) must do is find the two black queens Q and the Q and with the lie of the honors it should not be too difficult. 2. Negative Double (takeout for & )
  3. 5-spades & less than 10 high card points

Bidding to game on this deal is a little tricky in that the meaning of North's Negative Double changes as the auction progresses. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South with a good 7-card diamond suit AK108xxx, 11 hcp and 5 losers opens the bidding 1 and West overcalls 2. North makes a Negative Double as takeout for spades and hearts. Some might be tempted to to have North bid 2 directly, but 2 should show 10 hcp and North only holds 9 hcp of which 1 hcp is the J and 2 hcp are the Q.

For South the bid 2 bypassing the rebid of 2 should probably show some extra values. It is a toss-up but for the auction here we are going to first make South rebid 2. North now bids 2 changing the meaning of the original Takeout Double . North's 2 shows a 5-card spade suit but without the values to bid 2 directly. South knowing the partnership has a 9-card fit in spades, a void in hearts and only 2 dead clubs bids 4. For those who would have South bid 2 directly, North should raise to 3 and South will bid 4.

Play: The play of this deal is screwy. East/West has the right to win 2 club tricks, but unless East or West (whomever is on lead) finds a club opening lead, dealer (North in this auction) should be able to take 13 tricks pitching clubs on diamonds.

  1. balancing 1NT 11-15 high card points

The theme to this deal is restraint. North has a opening hand with a great spade suit KQJ1032 and just 5 losers , but with 4-hearts there is no reason on opening bid to do any other than just open 1 and bid out the hand. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: It is not wrong to open up North's hand and see spades before your eyes. If I opened North's hand if would have great expectations for this deal. But opening this deal say 4 would not adequately describe this hand. An opening bid of 4 should, by partnership agreement, be 8½ playing tricks or "one trick away from game" and North's hand has at best 8 winners (5 losers).

North opens 1 and when partner passes, is glad to have just opened 1. After East bids 1NT, some will play a balancing 1NT of 11-14 hcp which would require doubling first, but lets keep it simple here. North will rebid 2 in any event and that is where the auction should end.

Everybody should get to 6NT on this deal. This is not a good deal to bid 7 of anything on but IF I were going to bid 7 of anything it would be 7 as the partnership knows there is a 7-card fit in hearts. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: This bidding is straight forward for modern bridge (if you have questions, see the bidding footnotes on TCG).

This is not an easy slam to bid, most pairs will be happy to reach 4 on a combined 24 high card points . But hcp is not the way to lΘΘk at this deal, each hand has 16 support points and 6 losers . Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes on: http://thecommongame.com

Bidding: South opens the bidding 2 and West makes a Takeout Double which shows opening values (if not more), shortness in hearts, promises spades and implies clubs and diamonds (if West has some other strong bid, he will show on rebid). In response to the TO double, East knows 2 would show spade support, 3 would be invitational and 4 would reach game, but in support of spades East has 16 support points and a 6 loser hand so East cuebids 3 which has to show support in spades and at least game forcing values (East did not just bid 4).

So West knowing they are in a game forcing auction with 16 support points and a 6 loser hand just bids 3 showing better than opening values (or West would just bid 4). East makes a control bid of 4 and West a control bid of 4. East makes an asking bid of 5, asking if partner has good values in spades* (2 of top 3 honors) and West bids 6.

* If West had not already make a control bid in hearts, 5 would have a different meaning.

Play: The play is a little tricky, declarer (West) plays for spades to split 3-2 and puts 1st club on the A, gives up 2nd club, and trumps the 3rd and 4th clubs in dummy. Bridge Winners can see the trick by trick play on: http://thecommongame.com
