What to Expect from our Courses:

 

The Bridge Studio offers the most qualified and successful teachers in HRM.  Kathie Macnab and Jill McCormick have decades of teaching experience.  Kathie Macnab has earned the designation of Master Teacher from the American Bridge Teacher's Association and is also Better Bridge Certified Trainer for future teachers, Jill McCormick was a finalist for the North American Bridge Teacher's Association - Teacher of the Year.  Through training from Audrey Grant and Kathie Macnab the Bridge Studio adds 9 more teachers to it's roster - Victor Lamoureux, The Bridge Studio now enjoy both social and competitive bridge.  We offer lessons from the ACBL teaching series, Popular Topics, Audrey Grant's Better Bridge and specially designed and researched Bridge Studio lesson series.

 Improve Your Judgement - DOUBLES: This 6 week course at the Bridge Studio is based on the dynamite Audrey Grant text "Improving Your Judgment; Doubles". This course is suitable for newer players becoming familiar with competitive bidding techniques, as well as for more experienced players who are looking for clarification regarding doubles in various contexts.  This course: 

- will run from 9:30 till 11:30am each Tuesday Oct. 17th to Tuesday Nov. 21st;
- will cover all kinds of doubling scenarios, from the basic take-out double, to "balancing situations", as well as a full lesson on "negative doubles" (also known as "responder's double");
- will suggest specific guidelines intending to simplify for both partners an understanding of what a double means in different auctions, and how to respond to it;

Course Fee:  $75.00 plus $TBD.00 for optional student text book.

Bridge in a Day Beginner Classes – Starting with a FREE “Bridge in a Day” program on Saturday Sep 9th.  A 4- hour Workshop beginning at 10:30 am.  It will be an introduction to the Basics of Bridge using the Audrey Grant “Bridge Basic I” student book.  Lots of hands on play.  You will learn enough to get an idea of how much fun and strategic bridge can be and why it has entertained card players for centuries.  It is also a great refresher to someone that has been away from the game for a while.  There will be a lunch break (bring your own brown bag lunch) and two hospitality breaks, we will have coffee, cookies and muffins.  This one day program is FREE for everyone.  Tell your friends and family – here is a chance for them to see why you get so exited to play this game.    8 – Week beginner course to follow this workshop.

Bridge Basics - LEARNING THE GAME - Hands on Introduction to the Game of Bridge  - This 8 week course is a fun and easy way to learn the game of bridge.  Presented in a hands-on format that will have you playing cards by the end of the first lesson!  The first session will deal with hand structure and No-Trump bidding.  Giving the participants lots of time to play hands so they become comfortable declarers, as well we will discuss some basic ideas for the defending side.  The second session will look at suit bidding by opener and responder.  As well further insight into the ABC's of declarer play.  The course follows Audrey Grant's Bridge Basics I text.

Participants of the Beginner course are invited to join in any of Bridge Studio's Practice Plays, complimentary to March 31st

Competitive Bidding  -  This 8 week course from Audrey Grant is an excellent way to introduce players into COMPETITIVE BIDDING.  The next step from Basic Bidding.  This is the second in the Audrey Grant Bridge Basics Series.  This course is all about Competing in the Auction from Pre-emptive bidding, overcalls, takeout doubles and responding to each.  One of the best ways to improve your game is to be sure you understand the basics of bridge.

The course follows Audrey Grant's Bridge Basics II text.

Going beyond Blackwood, knowing early when you are in slam territory - this is an exciting course.

Apr 25th- communication issues/ saving and creating entries
May 2nd- dummy reversal/ choosing the master hand
May 9th- using clues from the bidding and plays of defenders
May 16th- counting/ deciding what suit(s) to count, and how to keep track
May 23rd- end plays/ setting them up to do your work for you
May 30th- deception & psychology / false carding and leading the opponents to the wrong line of defense.

Thinking Bridge Series This course for all advancing beginner thru to advancing player.  From the numerous lesson packages from Eddie Kantar we have taken 12 of his most popular and useful lectures.  These various topics will include improving your declarer play, and thinking on defense.  This course is not on conventions but some of the lessons will discuss bidding technique.  All the classes the type of hands that appear most of the time in any bridge game and how to improve your odds at bidding, playing or defending them better.  Even some of the topics that appear basic will offer insights into a better understanding of the meanings of the bids.  Presented by Kathie Macnab and Jim Kirby.

Spring 2014

 DOUBLES: This course for all advancing beginner thru to advancing player.  This course will cover  the many aspects fo the "Double".  Starting with the classic Takeout Double and responses the course moves quickly on to what it means when you rebid after you make a Takeout Double.  What it means to double and then make a rebid as opposed to making an overcall and later doubling.  Negative double and Responsive doubles along with Balancing doubles.  There is so much one can do with that simple little red card. § BRIDGE BASICS 2.5

This course was specially designed by Balon Buckley and Kathie Macnab is the perfect compliment to the ACBL Bidding Series and the Better Bridge Bridge Basics 1 series. Designed as a six week course, Steve is stretching this course into one that covers 8 weeks to give you ample practice hands. This course is a great review of the fundamentals of bidding. Completing this course should help the advancing player consolidate his understanding of the effectiveness of overcalls, take out bids, strong opening bids, and pre-emptive bids. In addition,  Steve will highlight what he thinks is perhaps the key to successful bidding - rebids by opener and responder....what's forcing, what's invitational, what's signing off. Tips on declarer play which focus on how to eliminate losers will also be included. $85.00 booklet included

Bridge Myths Exposed  -  This 12 week course is based from the Text book by David Bird.  Jill covered the "myths" on Declarer play over the summer and this fall will look at Defenders' Myths.   Strategies we have used automatically will be looked at in terms of when NOT to - Return Partner's Suit, Cover an Honour, Lead Through Strength, Ruff and a Sluff and many more.  This course is guaranteed to have you "thinking before you play, rather than playing before you think"!   Drop-ins are welcome ($12.00 per class).
